What Does Michael Phelps Eat for Breakfast? More Stuff Than You Eat All Day

How 'bout that Michael Phelps last night? Wondering what he eats to fuel the kind of performance we've been witnessing? Well, on Monday night NBC's Bob Costas reported a tidbit of jaw-dropping info: Michael Phelps recommended calorie intake is 8,000 to 10,000 calories.

Costas read Phelps' typical breakfast order from Pete's Grille in Baltimore, Maryland, as is recounted in Phelps' autobiography Beneath the Surface:

So, people are surprised that a world class athlete has to ingest about 4 or 5 times as much as a normal person?

    O...K...

i used to read the muscle media magazines while grocery shopping, and they always had athletes sharing their diets and training tips. I think shanon sharpe would eat around 6,000 and about 4 protein shakes a day.

man you know whats sad/crazy not his breakfast, many athletes eat like crazy for their metabolism, but that he has done enough in his life at the age of 23 to have an autobiography.

I wonder how many calories he burns in a day of "routine," training?

regular swimming (say just laps around the pool) for 1 hour typically burns 400-500 calories. now michael phelps goes HARDCORE for 5 hours a day -> so probably burn 4000-5000 calories, add onto that his regimen of weight training and cardio. so i say he burns in excess of 6-7000 calories a day.

I don't think I'm physically capable of eating that much in one sitting. He's a bigger guy though, 6'4", but they mentioned that he can't crack 200 lbs. Is that a goal, to get a little bigger?

I was the same way when I ran college track. I was a sprinter so Phelps & I had roughly the same build but with the amount of training, lifting and working out you do it's extremely difficult to keep your weight up without eating like that.

I couldn't quite house the type of food he can over the course of a day but my breakfasts/dinners were very similar. My college had a daily breakfast buffet type of deal that my teammates & I would absolutely punish. Usually, I did a giant breakfast/dinner with a healthy, sensible and workout-friendly type of lunch before my daily afternoon heavy workout.

Since then i'm still very active but I don't eat nearly what I used to and as a result i'm 20-25 pounds lighter than I was merely two years ago at this time. Achieving/maintaining a desired weight is very difficult to do so if you figure out a way to do it, stick with it!
