This thought stemmed from the recent LeBron drama, but I think it's an interesting question anyway.

I won't get into the issue of whether sports is trivial or not because I recognize that a lot of people care more about sports than 99% of the stuff that goes on in their life. Therefore, I will acknowledge feelings about sports and the people involved in sports as legitimate and understandable.

However, I find it interesting that people freely admit that they hate certain players, namely ones they find annoying or disagree with.

So here's what I want to know.

    1. Who are the players you hate and why do you hate them?

    2. How do you define "hatred"? Is it that you root against them when watching sports or do you legitimately harbor ill feelings towards them and wish them unhappiness and failure in life?

    3. Are your parameters for hating an athlete different than they are for hating regular people? That is to say, do you hold athletes more or less accountable for their shortcomings as you do with people you know?

While I still root against teams like the Lakers or the Cowboys and would define it as a sports "hatred", I don't think I could comfortably say that I hate any particular individual. What do you guys think?

I agree with you that these days people take sports way too seriously and sometimes have a hard time distinguishing it from real life. That being said, I would still like to see the the entire 2010 Tennessee Titans roster, coaching staff, and front office personnel DEAD.

    1. Who are the players you hate and why do you hate them?

KG, he talks too much ish and I didn't like what he did with his jersey when he returned to Minnesota.
    Lebron, his ego is ridiculous
Bosh, after all this, Bosh really looks like a tool (did anyone see him roaring at their introduction at media day? not the same without the hair)
Buyabitch, annoying douche-bag coattails for a championship and thinks he's good. he's the kind of guy you just look at him and get annoyed.

    2. How do you define "hatred"? Is it that you root against them when watching sports or do you legitimately harbor ill feelings towards them and wish them unhappiness and failure in life?
Root against them, I don't have any hard feelings personally with any of them except Sashana.

    3. Are your parameters for hating an athlete different than they are for hating regular people? That is to say, do you hold athletes more or less accountable for their shortcomings as you do with people you know?

I don't really care about what these players do on their free time, as long as it doesn't inflict their obligations to the team.

While I still root against teams like the Lakers or the Cowboys and would define it as a sports "hatred", I don't think I could comfortably say that I hate any particular individual. What do you guys think?[/QUOTE]

Hate is a strong word, I don't like these players, but if I am watching a game, and KG starts yappin his trap again I am likely to express my feelings as hate, even though I don't actually hate the guy...buyabitch is the exception of course

2 reasons to dislike an athelete....on the court, off the court or both. I dislike certain athletes for their attitude and actions on the court and certain players for their personality and actions off the court. Examples...

    On the court:
    - Shaq (talks too much ****, no humility)
    - Dirk (flopper, soft, underachieving)
    - Gasol (whines too much but i think he's great off the court)

    Off the court:
    - Lebron (egomaniac, sorta dislike on the court for that stupid dance)
    - Kobe (superiority complex, snitch, but love him on the court)
    - Warren Sapp (complete jackass imo on the field too)

While I don't "Hate" anybody, I have a strong dislike of players and teams for a number of ethical & moral reasons.

I like athletes who can be good role models for the world - If you know that you want to be a pro athlete, you should accept the responsibility that goes with the job - You KNOW that kids are going to look up to you, therefore you should show good moral character and judgement. Even Charles Barkley has recanted his statement that he "is not a role model" and has since said that he was wrong for thinking that.

That is the reason I love people like Hakeem, Tony Romo (although I strongly dislike the Cowboys), Mark Clayton, Criag Biggio, heck I've even got a great new respect for Jamal Washburn after reading about his off-court professions now. Its especially hard sometimes, when you can't stand a player like Karl Malone, but everything you read about them off-the-court is 100% opposite - apparently he's a real stand-up guy in person. Makes it hard to dislike him off-the-court.

That may be the reason why I never embraced Ron-Ron & I welcomed Battier when we got him.

I also can't stand the Yankees, for the sole reason that I can't take my kids to a Texas Rangers game when the Yanks are in town..because the stands are filled with loudmouth Yankee fans yelling F-bombs througout the entire game.

I don't hate anybody, so it means "I strongly dislike".

Except in Karl Malone's and Scottie Pippen's case...then it actually means "hate" :p.

Hating an athlete = willing to boo and heckle them at a game. Would laugh if they have bad games or spend their millions unwisely.

I would not wish career injury or serious personal harm on those people or their family.
