If we could get him at 3 million per or less at less than 20 minutes a game. I'd do it in a heartbeat. I think he can be effective for those minutes.

Yeah, I remember he played with a lot of heart in the playoffs for NJ a couple of years back. Diving for loose balls, lots of defensive intensity.

I wouldn't be opposed to it.

I dont think anyone would be opposed to doing it, if the price was right. BUT the price has to be right.

I think he is more than worth it. He is a real liability on offense, but he is an awesome defender. Also, he can probably be had for relativley cheap, so why not? His averages when he got at least 24 minutes per game are 2.67 blocks per game and 9.4 rebounds per game. I think that is pretty dang good. The only problem is that he kind of seems to slow the game up for us a little bit because he is so slow. So he might be a little bit of an offensive liability. With McGrady out there though, it probably won't be so obvious. He is 38 years old so we probably will only get like a year or two out of him before he decides to retire.

He's GARBAGE. Sorry he had his time, and in his day he was an awsome defender. The east is desprate for big men and he can't get playing time anywhere....thats for a reason.

    back to the drawing board..........

Worse than Hakeem attempting to go and play in Toronto IMO.
Rather pay Mihm, Clark, Swift or someone who can atleast get up and down the court.

Mutombo is not a FA. He's in his last year of contract with NY. He'll get paid 4.5 mil. this year. Expiring contracts are valuable in the league these days. The only thing that we could trade for him (that NY would want) is the trade exception. I would trade the TE for Mutombo if the Knicks take it (they could then use the TE to acquire Crawford whom they want). Deke can still be an effective player for 15-20 minutes a night. He played well for NY in some games last season. I don't think that he's too old. His age was a mystery in the first place. Many belive that he's well into his 40s already. The way he keeps himself in shape, he can play play three more years.

I think Mutumbo is nearly done and if we got him he would undoubtedly be injured for a substantial part of the season. However, I would rather acquire him using the trade exception than to not use it at all.

Isn’t he under contract for like $50M? Oh wait, I see he has an 18.7M salary this year and somehow that is being split as 14.3M in New Jersey and 4.5 in New York. How did they do that?

I don't think it's so important that he's old - we're only asking him to play 15 minutes. His contract only has ONE season remaining.

He would be excellent for bench help IMO. Also, if Yao goes down unfortunately, it wouldn't be so horrible for him to get 30 minutes a game assuming he's in shape. He'll bring some excellent experience to the team, specifically Yao, and will help Yao in practice tremendously as well.

However, I don't know WHY we would just take him off NY's hands for free. I'd ask for one of the following:

    - A draft pick.
    - A MoT for Kurt Thomas and change swap.
    - Throw in Frank Williams.

However, if they don't budge, I would eventually accept something like a second rounder or a heavily protected future first.

New Jersey bought out his contract and released him. He signed a new deal with the Knicks for two years, 4.5 mil. a year. His salary would only count 4.5 mil. toward cap space.

I agree. They should pay us to take him. But I'd need a barf bag for when I saw him doing his finger-wagging thing for the first time in a Rocket uniform. Maybe we just shouldn't go there!

The biggest trouble I wuold see here is that I think he was pretty pissed off with the minutes he got in NJ. I mean appart from that he didn't get on with Scott at all. However, given that Yao is a few seasons in I would expect his minutes to go up significantly this season and I dont see Mutumbo happy riding the bench for most of the game

Hes already under contract so we would have to trade somebody to NY to get him. Hes not under his large contract anymore, but he is still overpaid at 4.4 million in the last year of his contract. The nets bought him out of his contract and waived him and NY picked him up.
