like i've said about a hundred times i'm from Holland.two years ago a couple of american children came to play tennis in a tournament i organise.and when i asked what they thought of holland he anwserd:great i can drink alcohol from the age of 16 and they sell drugs everywhere.i can't wait.
    the kid was 16.

i thought everybody thought of holland as a country full of Tulps, windmills and wooden shoes and cows everywhere.but now i'm not shure. What do you think of when you think of holland?maybe the great sportsmen(watch my Sig).
    i'm verry curious.

I think of the silver skates, the boy who puts his thumb in the dam, Holland, Amsterdam, Rotterdam, and how we wasted a pick on that goof, Serge Zwikker.

That is what I think of when I think of the Netherlands.

the netherlands is also a hot bed for great art, if I'm not mistaken. I've always wanted to visit your country and hope to in the next few years. I will probably make at least one stop in a coffee shop but getting high wouldn't be the purpose of my trip. What else would you suggest the wife and I do while there?

    "Hash is legal there right?"

"It's legal but it ain't 100% legal. I mean, you can't just walk into a restaurant, roll a joint and start puffin' away. They want you to smoke in your home or certain designated places."

    "And those are hash bars?"

"All right you break it down like this:
It's legal to buy it, it's legal to own it. If you are the proprietor of a hash bar, it's legal to sell it.
It's legal to carry it, but that don't matter cause get a load of this.
If you get stopped by a cop in Amsterdam, it's ILLEGAL for them to search you. I mean that's the right the cops in Amsterdam DON'T have."

"I'm going that's all there is to it. I'm f*cking going."

"You'd dig it the most babe."

    hash bars, hookers, and Heineken

    Dennis Bergkamp.

    Van Gogh.

    Anne Frank.

Ajax (pronounced EYE-yaks for some reason)

    Heineken.

but I didn't know any of that stuff until I had been myself for the coffee shops :D ... the best of which are not in the Red Light District...

Funny story from my last trip to Amsterdam:

I had just rolled in from the airport, and was walking around near Central Station (had a couple of hours to kill waiting for a friend who was also coming in that day) when a guy gives the classic "PSSSST! Hey! PSSST!" I said 'NO,' and kept walking. He started to follow me continuing to say 'HEY' and 'PSSSST!' So I turned around and said 'look, in this place I can get alcohol, tobacco, pot, prostitutes....even the coke and X guys say 'coke, coke' or 'X,X' on the street, so I have no idea what you are selling, but I'm not interested."

I have no idea what he was selling but c'mon, when is enough enough?

I think of Amsterdam first and foremost...one of the best cities in the entire world. I think of the Dutch trading empire of the latter half of the last milennium, one of the most unlikely and interesting powers to ever develop seemingly out of nowhere, and an excercise in true mercantile imperialism. I also think of that region as being the impetus for Louis XIV's fall from Sun King status to just another failed Imperialist...I do think of low country, fairly flat terrain interwoven with canals and dykes, and if pressed would probably admit to visions of wooden clogged blonde haired lusty lasses with smiles on thier lips and mishief in their eyes...but as I'm not pressed I'll not mention that sordid little aspect of my imaginings...

Also, living in Canada, I am often made aware of how incredibly hospitable a land Holland is for Canadians...and we have the tulips here to prove it.

I love Amserdam - I've never had the chance to see the rest of the country. I used to have the pleasure of 12 hour stopovers in Amsterdam on my way throuigh Europe several times a year, and I always made the most of it.

I've done the museums (Rembrandt mostly I think) the canal tours, walked the city. Very beautiful. For all the attention Amsterdam receives for its Red Light District, I don't think it is any different from a big US city's RL, like San Francisco for instance./

Of course, I can't stand that cheating b#$tard Pieter Van Den HogenBand, ever since he knocked off Thorpe in the Olympics (;) Just kidding - it was an awesome performance)

Rembrandt Van Rijn...some people consider to be the greatest painter of all time.

He's from the Netherlands, studied in Amsterdam.

I think of the grand-daddy of all events, the Cannabis Cup. The best growers in the world converge on Amsterdam to decide once and for all who's stuff is THE stuff.

When I really think about the Netherlands, a lot of many things from their history come to mind. But, off the cuff, the word evokes drugs and prostitutes. Sorry.
