Can someone play doctor, and tell me what causes migraine headaches? And how one can relieve themselves of headaches.
It can be 3 things I think In Steves Case 1. Could be his Diet something he is consuming? 2. Stress 3. And the biggest one could be allergies. I have read somewhere Other common migraine triggers include: Stress and fatigue Changes in weather, season, altitude level or time zone Changes in sleep patterns, including too much or too little sleep Bright lights Unusual odors Certain medications, including cimetidine (Tagamet), fenfluramine (Pondimin), nifedipine (Procardia) and theopylline (TheoDur, Theo-24) Low blood sugar, changes in mealtimes, skipped meals or fasting Intense physical exertion, including sexual activity
I believe it's due to blockage of blood flow to the head. That "pounding" that's felt is actually the pulsative movement of blood trying to push its way past some clog in an artery. I could of course be wrong on that... But I think it's usually due to some sort of congestion in an artery that supplies the cranial region with blood.
There are lots of triggers and they vary from person to person. Chocolate, caffeine, and MSG give me headaches. From what I understand there are certain substances that cause the blood vessels in your brain to constrict which is what causes the headaches. Pretty much what Treeman mentioned. Also, there is an excellent place in Houston called the Houston Headache Clinic which is run by Dr Ninan T Mathew. This guy is awesome. I had an accident several years ago where I collided with someone really violently on the b-ball court and had horrible headaches afterward. They got so bad that I couldn't sleep. After a few weeks of visiting various doctors who prescribed me Demerol and other strong drugs which did nothing, I was referred to Dr Mathew and he has this technique with intravenous medication that breaks the headache pains. After that treatment which took about a week, he gave me beta blockers and some pain medicine called Midrin and it totally helped big time. Stevie should visit them on Hermann Drive, they know what they're doing.
There are no pain sensing tissues in brain tissue, either glial cells or neurons, which is why the pain is always vascular. Usualy problems that are not vascular make themselves known in other, more sinister ways. Most of the drug treatments for migranes actually involve drugs like caffene, or ergotamine that constrict blood passageways. The idea being that these veins may be pressing themselves up against grey matter, causing the activation of the pain receptors. In otherwords, you get migranes when your brain is too big for your head, along with the veins and arteries, and dura, etc.
Ottomaton: I thought the idea was to dilate the passageways in order to increase blood flow? Constricting the passageways is what causes the problem in the first place. Drinking coffee will certainly not make a migraine go away. I thought that the constriction - and the consequent pressure applied to vascular walls as a result of the pressure buildup - was what caused the "pounding"? I was under the impression that ADH-type medicines (anticoagulants and/or hydros) would free up congestion and lessen the pain (and increase needed blood flow to the brain)? I may be wrong on this, but...
Although used for thousands of years in traditional herbal medicine, in modern America the Ginkgo biloba tree has been used mainly in parks as an ornament. But just recently, because of its efficacy, it is now one of the most used herbs in American and the world. Why? Because of its tremendous ability to increase blood and oxygen flow to the brain. The pharmaceuticals are obviously not working for Francis. Somebody please call 1-800-437-2362. Order the Brain Formula and give it to Steve. It only cost 28 bucks. For those who snicker, the American Medical Association has even done their own placebo-controlled, double blind, randomized studies and came to the same conclusion about Gingko biloba.
different causes.... i've had them pretty much all my life. mine are trigged by heat.. light sometimes. being in crowded enclosed places.. (less oxygen is my explanation for that one i guess).. and i've had them before and decided i'd play basketabll a litte longer lol.. not a good idea. after a while that pounding of the ball against the court.. feels like it is in your head
If the Rockets were in playoff contention, Francis would be playing. They want to improve their lottery pick!
I experienced what ottamaton said. For a while i got killer migranes. My migranes were caused by EXPANDED blood vessels pressing up on brain/skull/optic nerves. Wearing sunglasses almost 24/7 killed that as a fashin statement for me. The Dr gave me the ergot derived medince (was told its was originally discovered as mold from rye wheat. Take too much & it can effect you like LSD, which is NOT fun in this case). Gone in about 2-3 weeks, but had to take a long course of the drug for the full effect. And quite quick response when suffering pain... (maybe a placebo effect - any of the sites numbers medical people???) They prob call "migranes" all severe headache like pain. A medical grouping like cancer (no tie in to the KT thread ) perhaps???
When I get headaches it usually results from caffiene, usually in soft drinks like that Atlanta based company one, and where ever that other one is from. No free plugs from me. Sometimes the sun gives me headaches too. Stress too. I just take some Tylenol and go to seep, and it goes away. I guess some peole don't get Migranes that often Steve should cut down on his intake of Caffinated drinks, and stay indoors sometimes. He should also quit smoking weed (if he does this, ahhhhlegelly. He's an NBA player, who doesn't?) If it does reoccur, he should try to do some Eastern Medicines ike Acupuncture or something. Stick some needles here and there, and he could be all spiffy.
If Francis misses many many more games due to this, then other teams fans will seriously start believing this. I mean there is a remote remote REMOTE chance the Rockets are trying to improve their lottery chances.
