My fiancee and I are planning on moving into an apartment complex near the Medical Center. The apartment/price is nice but the only drawback is that they don't offer Time Warner cable. I currently have RoadRunner and don't want to have to give it up. I know that TVmax was formerly known as Optel. According to the leasing office, TVMax now offers high speed cable internet. What can you tell me about TVMax?
I had Optel at two previous apartments -- and hated them. At my last one, when they went into bankruptsy, they were awful. Our complex finally gave up on them, and gave the 30 day notice for a changeover (per the contract) and they said 'no thanks, we'll cut everyone off now.' The apartment & new provider went scrambling, because none of the new equipment was set up. When I moved into my present apartment, and found out that TVMax (who I had never heard of) was formerly Optel, I seriously considered trying to get out of the lease. However, I've had the expanded basic (?) 99 channel package and haven't had any problem. It's nice not having to have a converter on every TV. I also live near the medical center (near the dome) -- We may be neighbors. There's SWB switches north and south of the Medical Center, one at OST and Fannin. I have DSL, and it is lightning fast. I've always been on the DSL side of the whole Cable/DSL debate, but I would seriously reccomend going with the SBC DSL over a TVMax cable product. Optel was riddled with service problems, and the 'new' TVMax is brand new to the internet business. I've had no problems with my DSL connection, and it's a lot easier to hook up. Also, because of the proximity to the switches in the area, it's arguably faster. (At the least, there's probably not enough of a difference that most people could tell the difference.)
