other than the title of this thread...what can you not understand? what opinion/view just baffles you? Yes...there is a reason for me coming up with this one. I'm watching the news just a bit last night and I learn that partial birth abortion has been banned. Most of you guys know how I feel about abortion in general. But I do understand the arguments on the other side, even if I don't agree with them. But not so on partial birth abortion...the baby is seconds away of being removed completely from the mother...no longer her burden...completely viable life...and then its head is punctured with scissors and its brain removed. so it dies just seconds from its first breath. i can not...for the life of me...understand how anyone could say that should be a legal procedure in this country. or could make some argument that they have a right to jab scissors in their partially born child's skull to extract its brain and kill it. can't grasp that at all...not even a little bit... Don't mean for this to be a discussion on partial birth abortion...but any one have any similar views where they just can't begin to grasp what the other side is saying?
Max- I agree with you on this subject and cannot understand why the judge in Lincoln would block the order. I caught a few minutes of the local news last night {Lincoln is 30 miles from Omaha} and the doctor they were talking with said it had everything to do with the womens health. I didnt get to see the whole thing so I cannot really comment on it although in General I feel this is a bad move.
Well, I can see it if you have to make the decision in order to save the mother's life, but other than that, I agree with you. There's a lot I can't understand. The one that popped into my head when I first read your post is the views that some here (and not on this BBS) have on cheaper drugs and healthcare for the elderly and poor. How anyone could value a little bit more money in their wallet over sick people getting healthy is beyond me. In fact, it's quite sickening to me and I wake up every morning thankful I don't live my life that way.
but i don't understand that...i mean we're talking about a mere push away from this baby being born....and maybe not even that. i'm certainly not a doctor...but i just can't grasp that. i certainly can in an abortion at some other point...but not at the point where the baby is halfway out.
I completely understand your point. However, could you imagine being there and discovering that the baby could kill your wife? How would you react in that situation? Of course, I'm not positive how exactly that would work and maybe I'm just buying into all the propaganda, but if someone's life is at risk, you think you'd give them the choice of deciding whether or not they die.
I don't understand people who put Dave Matthews quotes in the sig. BTW he's the musical guest on SNL this week! I'd have to say another thing I don't understand is why the religious right (or anyone for that matter) insist on telling people how to live their life.
"Baby" off of Some Devil... I'm with you on the if it would kill your wife, thing....i just don't see how...at that point...it could. the baby has to be removed anyway, whether its dead or alive. it's already passing out and your muscles are working it out naturally through contraction. at that point the baby is halfway out....i don't see how killing the baby at that point spares the life of the mother. that makes no sense to me at all.
RM95-- It's not like we want to see sick people become sick. It's just that we believe there should be a more prudent solution to this problem which does not just take money from a certain few's pockets... It's more of a case of avoiding the tyranny of the majority... as DeToqueville would put it....
It comes down to a distinction between intention. When you are trying to save the mother's life, it is not really an abortion. When you are doing anything else, it is...therefore, when the direct intent is to open the babies skull and kill it, well, there is no real way to get around that as being an intention for death....There has to be a more prudent way to try and remove the baby, one that gives the baby a chance, no matter how slim it might be... I.E. A baby is stuck in the Fallopian Tubes, so the doctor's try to move it, a process that pretty much always terminates the pregnancy. They try to move the baby, not kill it, yet the baby dies....not an abortion...due to a difference in intention... Is this kosher Max? I'm extremely PRO LIFE as well so I'm looking for some solutions...
Yeah, I should probably do some research on that when I have the time. I've just always heard that it was done to save the life of the mother without really ever asking how. Pretty dumb of me. twhy77, what is that prudent solution? What is more important in this world than the health of ourselves, our families, and our fellow citizens?
The problem with that is there is no distinction made on the word "health". It could be mental health, emotional health, it's just such a broad word. With abortion, at least there is the worthy debate of when life starts. I have my opinion, but it's just that...my opinion. On the other hand, these partial birth abortions are so sick and disgusting, I don't know how anyone could support not banning them. I'm not a doctor but with all of our medical technology, it seems like we can prevent having to do them to save the womens life.
It's kind of hard to escape. By someone saying, don't tell me how to live my life, you are in effect telling them how not to live their life as well. Their is always a will to power going on among individuals, and there are fundamental human truths we must all subscribe too. That said, the religious right (which I'm not technically a part of I think, being Catholic) sees the path of Christ as the path opening up the human to live to its full extent, to go supra-natura and participate in the virtues of faith, hope, and love. However, that is the glory of free will, because man can either choose to live that way, or turn away, The final choice lays with them. Unless of course Big Brother is watching. If that happens, just ready your face for the rat filled cage and submit your will to the man.
There are many things that I can't understand. Probably the first one that I thought of is how people don't seem to mind that there is a felon loose in the whitehouse with access to top secret security information, and as leaked it before, and has the ability to do so again. We know that a crime has been committed the only thing we don't know is who it was who committed it. There are a limited number of people with access to that information and thus a limited suspect list. I understand your's and othes anger when Clinton broke the law by committing perjury. That was a crime. I would think leaking classified security information which could jeopardize lives, and operations affecting the security of our nation is significantly more serious. I realize that in Clinton's case it was the president himself who broke the law and that in this case it probably wasn't, but the criminal is still loose and still has the same security clearance. Another one is why people feel like calling Clinton and others opposed to the war unfit to serve as commander-in-chief, but do support a commander-in-cheif who was AWOL for about year of his duty. Then there is the whole homophobia thing. Why should it bother anyone if somebody else is gay? It doesn't interfere with heterosexuals lives at all. Boy Bands... Britney Speares...
OK, let's just assume for a minute that a partial birth abortion could save the life of the mother. Do you really feel comfortable telling that person she can't save her own life?
Hey I didn't say I had the more prudent solution...but here's an idea I heard. If the American Medical Association lowered their standards for Doctors on the MCAT's by one measley point, there would by a greater increase of doctors and hence lower health care. However, these jerk heads won't do it simply to protect their salaries. It's a monopoly on the medical profession and quite simply sad. Thats just an idea, but its such a knee jerk to just say we should target the rich and take their money. We are American, we're freaking creative!!!
Once again, it comes down to a question of intention, if it is the case that that is why they would even think about that sick procedure.
I wouldnt. At that point I believe it is up to the Mother to decide, if she had the capability of doing so.
my point is, i can't begin to understand an argument that killing the baby after it's been halfway delivered is any safer for a mother than simply pulling the baby out alive. and ima is right...health reasons has come to mean mental health as well...and there's all sorts of congressional testimony about doctors performing abortions because of concern for the mental health of a woman who is worried her lifestyle will be upset after the baby is born. if you're going to allow a procedure like this to take place, it seems to me there ought to be tighter controls than that...we are, after all, talking about the creation of human life.
