What came 1st the chicken or the egg a question asked for a long time finally answered the most scientific way a clutchcity poll!!!
I say egg. Because at some point, when you go back far enough in evolution, whatever laid the egg was NOT a chicken. But there were evolutionary changes that made whatever was IN the egg chicken.
I'm probably the only person that will actually take this seriously (probably the first time I've taken ANYTHING seriously on this board), but: If the egg came first, then what would sit on it to hatch it? If the egg came first, then what would feed it when and if it finally hatched? For those that say that the egg had to come first in order to hatch a chicken, then how was the egg created? Well, whatever created that egg probably has the power to create a chicken, too... oh well, it's too close to 5:00 to do too much thinking...
It all depends on when the evolutionary CHANGES happened. Did they happen while the animal was walking around, then it's DNA changed and it became a chicken? Or did it happen in the egg, while the chicken was being created? It HAS to be the egg right?
I'll say the chicker due to evolution. A non-egg laying species evolved into the present-day chicker.
Finally, I've discovered a way to solve this particular question. Exhibit A: The Japanese band "Plus Chicker." By the way, they have a US-produced compilation called "Hey! Bob! My friend!" so they are obviously good. Exhibit B: The Japanese band "Egg Man (Tomi)." I believe one can verify that Egg Man came first! Is this close enough to an answer for everyone?
I'm saying the egg because I believe in evolution. I believe this question has been asked several times before on the BBS if I am not mistaken but oh well, this is one of those oldie but goodie questions anyhow.
Here's a good explanation for me. I'll go with the egg! Actually, this question is more anthropological than evolutionary, since the chicken (Gallus domesticus) didn't exist until its domestication around 2000 BC in Indochina. The first chicken came from the first chicken egg, which was laid by a red junglefowl (Gallus gallus). Whether you argue creation or evolution, the fact that humanity predates and is responsible for the speciation of chickens from red junglefowl should lay the "chicken or the egg" question to rest. From an evolutionary perspective, this answer holds for all species: the first member(s) of any species were the offspring of another very similar species, i.e. evolution argues that the egg always comes first. From a creationist perspective, this answer is anomalous, since all species that predate humanity originated as adults around 4004 BCE, i.e. creationism argues that the red junglefowl came before the red junglefowl egg. http://www.madsci.org/posts/archives/jun2000/960571926.Ev.r.html
