I think around 60 grand a year. That's how much Mike Harris makes, and he's the best NBDL player in the league.
I might not agree with Barkley on most things, but in this scenario, I think he makes a point. There are European leagues where some of these players might make a good amount of money playing in, but the D-League expanding is probably a bad idea for a lot of players. Imagine some of these players who knows nothing but to play basketball and they're just not at a level that could make it to the NBA or Euro-League. I do believe they are better off trying to get an education or a job where they could grow into. Being in the D-League for a few years without improving any other skillset.
$25-30K/year. Except for players who get sent down from the NBA - they get their regular NBA Salary (such as Hansbrough, Thabeet, etc).
Jeez, he is so wrong....just getting called up a few times adds thousands of $$$$ into their hands. And some of them do make it.....and it makes a great spot for NBA teams to send guys down to get some court time. Barkley needs to stick to getting blow jobs in his SUV.... DD
What about fans that like watching a minor league team? He's right about needing to boost up the family structure. He's right about SOME of the players, but he shoved that into an odd platform.
While Barkley is kinda right there is occasionally some good role players in the DLeague. And while he is a Jazz, I respect Sandiata Gaines for this shot (probably the only jazz i respect besides Deron): <object width="640" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/PI6iQgMp-nA&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/PI6iQgMp-nA&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="640" height="385"></embed></object>
who wouldn't stick to that? lol i think he's right to an extent, and so are you. sure its good for the nba to have a place where teams can send down rookies to develop. but chucks focusing on the players, not the nba. out of all of the guys in the dl, only a few get called up, and even fewer stick. consider how many guys there are in that league and the chances of sticking are slim. now if you give up 3-5 years trying to make it when your only earning about 25-30k before taxes, it might not be the best choice these kids can make.
D-League won't be worthwhile until the NBA wises up and allows each team a $200K salary exception to each team for use on a single wunderkind out of high school. Give the 1&Dones an alternative to falsifying SAT scores or Greek for beginners audiotapes. If the D-League gets to showcase the likes of John Wall, Demarcus Cousins, etc, a lot of people will sit up and notice. The players getting sent down will have legit competition to play against. To help send them there, I also slap a 3-yr draft ineligibility on anyone that accepts a college scholarship. You want to be a student athlete, be a student athlete, not a farce minor leaguer getting paid by moral-less agents and boosters.
