With the current state of Rock music being mostly complete garbage (unless you check out indie bands), I wonder who will be the next Nirvana to come along and shake up the music industry much like what happened in the early 90's.

Basically "Hair Metal" had been running strong and ruling the airwaves from about 1984 to 1991. It wasnt until Nirvana first appeared followed by all the other indie to major label jumpers, and music since has not been the same.

The 90's provided us with some great bands. Bands that you could count on providing you a damn good album every 2 years or so. Alice and Chains, STP, and Rage were my favorites during this time. The quality of music was great: deep lyrics, guitarists with talent, and overall a better product.

Today, although there are a few standouts, we have been bombarded with this new wave metal from bands with little talent, and a completely generic cookie cutter sound. For the past 4 years my ears have endured enough torture from this garbage to scar me for life! One hit/album, here today gone tomorrows are running amuck on the airwaves.

So who will change the face of music again? What style of music will make this fad die faster than hair metal?

Someone please save us from this sad point in rock music!

The only band that comes to mind for now are the Strokes (if thats where rocks going, god save us all).

Its cool though. As long as STP, Jerry Cantrell, and the Chili Peppers continue to crank out great music, I could care less what anyone else in rock is doing.

Define "next big thing." Do you mean critical success or record sales or both? Personally, I don't think anyone could have predicted Nirvana would do what they did. They pretty much came out of nowhere and, for a while, were blistered by some critics.

The Strokes are an interesting band but, generally, retro isn't revolutionary enough to start a massive change. I mean, they are cool but so was The Knack and they did it first. :)

Plus, I'm not sure the music biz is set up to accomodate the big music revolution any longer. Since Nirvana, there have been small uprisings in music - Latin invasion, singer/songrwiter, female rockers, techno, heavy metal, etc. But, none of them really sustained any momentum because too often they were overdone by the industry.

Since the birth of Nirvana, the music industry has begun a process called "copycatting" which is where you sign anyone that sounds similar to what other label's hit bands sound like. When Pearl Jam came out, it sent labels clamoring to sign Stone Temple Pilots, Silver Chair and Candlebox. They were all good in their own right, but they were stikingly similar to each other.

To me, the place where the music industry will grow the most is where it has the widest gap to fill and that, IMO, is R&B music. The most innovation in the industry and the biggest impact on pop music over the past few years has been as a result of R&B, hip hop and rap. It has been steadily going that way since the mid 90's and the crossover between pop, rock and R&B/Hip Hop/Rap is striking.

My guess is that we'll see a strong African American artist doing a combination of rock, hip hop and r&b that will crossover to both audiences. As soon as someone breaks the boundries of the glitzy money-driven rap world to trudge into the quirky, moody alt.rock world and is able to do it convincingly, we'll have our winner. :)

    One other note about this...

I think that the influence of inexpensive professional recording equipment for home studios and the massive spread of internet and MP3 technology is going to forever alter the way we hear music.

My wife and I were just discussing how there is a slowly erupting contingent of international artists making their fame in America: Shakira comes immediately to mind but there are many others.

The more we are able to communicate with and listen to musicians all over the world via the internet, the more it will shape the development of our own American art forms. Personally, I think we are not far off from seeing the development of the "internet artist;" someone whose entire career is focused on recording, producing and selling their prodcut(s) from the confines of their home and doing so on the net.

I don't think any of us can fully anticipate how this will evolve but the next 10 years are going to be fascinating to watch.

The Strokes, though they're one of my favorite bands, are pretty much a ripoff of early Velvet Underground/Television. Except a little better, imo. Nothing groundbreaking, just solid, solid songwriting and catchy riffs. Ditto goes for White Stripes, with their pure, raw ass rock and roll (also been there done that.)

REM was the next Nirvana. Radiohead could be the next REM. Believe it or not, they're one of the most influential bands today, look at Coldplay and Travis, who both have admitted that Radiohead plays a large part in their music making. Also, they combined techno with pop/rock on KID A, which seems to be where music is headed. It's all gonna be Pink Floyd prog techno **** soon, that and garage blues.

I'm happy because music's on the up and up, it all moves in cycles. Just like the 80s disco cocaine glam shxt turning into Rage, Soundgarden, Nirvana, Sonic Youth, Pumpkins etc., I believe Britney and Nelly, with their bling bling whores will give way for The Strokes, Stripes, Trail of Dead, and Radioheads of the world.

I love the Strokes, and I know that they keep getting the Velvet Underground comparison, but I just don't get it. I have every VU album, as well as two bootlegs. I learned to play guitar by VU, but the Strokes sound nothing like VU to me.

IMHO, When I hear the Strokes, I feel like I'm listening to the rock and roll sensabilities of Iggy Pop, circa "Iggy and the Stooges - Raw Power" combined with the Bowiesque production values of "Iggy Pop - Lust for Life", with perhaps a bit of the NY Dolls thrown in.

I think the VU comparison is more of the style of singing and song structure. Its very similar, para example the half singing half talking. The Strokes' It's hard to explain is a good example of a VUesque song. And yes, Iggy Pop is a nice comparison.

I had hoped that the remaining members of Rage with Chris Cornell would have shook things up and come out with some really awesome music. Cornell has a voice that can peel the paint off of walls like Robert Plant and Tom is a revolutionary guitar player like Jimmy Page. I'm not saying that they would have been the next Zeppelin, just that a good singer and a great guitar player make for an awesome band. Too bad we will never know, though I have read that the album they recorded will still be released.

    Guns N' Roses.

    The Strokes??

The tacky things people become enamored with is something I need to capitalize on.
