I finally gave in and bought a bunch of reusable canvas bags. Is this something that normal people do, or is it practiced exclusively by aging hippies?

i use both. i usually stock up on the plastic and then use the canvas ones until i run out of the plastic ones that i use for small garbage. Does that make sense? Am I helping the environment at all?

Eh... I don't see too many ppl with them... lol... I usually see plastic bags or those paper bags (usually only in Kroger now, all the other places Walmart, HEB, Randalls got cheaper).. nothing wrong with it though..

The canvas ones definitely help with the heavier items so none of the bags tear while i'm carrying them.

My canvas bag would be helpful....IF I REMEMBER TO BRING IT WITH ME!

I think they're great, and hold up better than paper or plastic, its just for me, remembering i even have one is half the battle :(

I'd rather not carry that canvas purse thing around.

I carry all my groceries with my bare hands.

Plastic bags then I find ways to reuse them. I have a cloth bag I bought but like one poster said, you almost never remember to bring it.

As noted already, the plastic bags are good for small garbage bags later. Also good for pet poop picker uppers.

Reusable bags. They stay in the car so I/we don't forget them.

    Keep them in your car?

Anyway, plastic bags here. I reuse grocery bags as trash bags and to carry assorted items on trips.

Funny story at Fry's once. A friend and I were at a cashier next to this old lady (late 50s to mid 60s). She purchases like a DVD or something small, and her cashier asks if she needs a bag. She tells the guy "No. You know those plastic bags take 1000 years to degrade" and leaves with some smugness. My friend, my cashier, her cashier, and I (all guys from like our early 20s) all look at each other with a guy recognition and think she's crazy.

Plus, spending my college years in Austin made me hate hippies.

I always use the plastic bags. I actually have a ton of them now, so I usually just throw them out. I should recycle them, but don't know where to other than back at Wal-Mart and I don't want to look like a loser.

I think it's pretty much accepted you're a loser if you're at Wal-Mart. You might as well accept that and get on with saving the planet.

I've got several canvas ones, however, I often buy more groceries than the bags can hold... Then I end up getting plastic bags, which I reuse as trash bags or lunch bags. But I need some more of those canvas ones for sure.

Okay, and then when you are at the register with all your stuff on the conveyor belt and realize the bags are still in the car, then what do you do?

In France, the grocery stores don't have bags; you have to bring your own. I would keep forgetting mine in the car, so I would put all my groceries back in the cart without bags after buying them, then load them into the car without bags, and then carry them into the house without bags. You'd think after a couple of weeks like that I would remember, but I never could.

If I have forgotten my old empty 25 lb rice bag, I request paper bags.
