we have many threads dedicated to what our two superstars should do over the summer, but non on our "ultimate role player", i thought this would be interesting..

I think Battier is too restricted on the offense - ie we just see him sit outside on the three point line and nothing else, for a former college 3pt champion (IIRC) I think he can be a great jump shooter, ie rip hamilton

if he works on his inside shot, running around screens etc he can really balance out the offence

so far the only two moves he uses are the 3pt shot or backing down the defender in the paint for a hook shot..If he models his offensive game a bit more like Rip, I think it will benefit us greatly

there's nothing he can work on. he's already one of the most fundamentally sound players in the game. his limitations are physical.

i dont think thats the case

you can never say "there is nothing he can work on"

even jordan hakeem regularly worked on stuff and you tell me that Battier cant???

larry bird, steve nash just to name a few players that are limited physically...yet i am sure they kept working on some aspects of thier game over the summer

Battier will likely work a little more on his mid-range game this summer. I believe he devoted a lot of last summer to developing his post game. While he was not utilitzed too often, he did show flashes of good low post skills when posting up smaller defenders. Look for a little more of the same there next year. Also, he'll probably shoot a lot 3s and 18-foot jumpers in the flow of the offense.

Assuming the Rockets don't do something stupid like trade him, Battier will be just fine and ready to go in October.

    Shooting more elbow jumpers.

Drive, stop, and pop within 15 ft.

At this point in his basketball career he is what he is. He was not brought here to be the 3rd scoring option on offense so asking him to be that is not going to work. They passed on Gay for Battier because Battier is the consumate team player and filled a void on the roster that had been created through years of bad drafts and personnel decisions.

Transfer some of his smarts and knowledge to the rest of the players.

Exactly. You can't make Shane into something he isn't. If that ain't good enough then they should trade him. Just remember he's the 3rd best player on this team and there isn't a close 4th.

That's preposterous. Jordan and Hakeem had physical gifts that their skillsets grew into and expanded within. Nash and Bird could already shoot and pass from the start - they just refined their games. Shane is what he is at this point. He might be able to improve his shooting somewhat but he's not going to add aspects to his game suddenly.

This reminds me of the ridiculous threads from last summer that fed the notion that Shane was going to average 18ppg this past year due to some expanded role on offense.

I love Shane but his 2.6 rebounds per game in the playoffs was just pathetic. Even Luther averaged more in almost half the minutes. That is just too sad. Not to mention both Harpring and the Crying Game Kirilenko outplayed him. I know he has so many intangibles that help the team but he also has some tangibles that really suck. And the problem is like others have said he's already maxed out his athleticism. If Bonzi comes back than Shane should be the first guy off the bench.

If that happens I would like to see him improve his 3-point shooting and get a mid range game like Howard. If Battier becomes are 6th man I would still like to see him averaging 30 minutes a game but not 40. Battier is an intensity guy that does all the dirty work, takes the toughest assignments and leaves it all on the court. But you can't expect him to play 40 minutes and still have energy at the end of the game. So I would like to see him step up the intensity if that is possible but more importantly have enough stamina to keep that intensity going till the end.

Oh and I was one of the guys he thought he could play the PF spot and average 8 rebounds a game. I was fooled.

Definitely ball handling and driving to the basket. Every time he tries to drive it, it looks like he's about to lose the ball or fall over.

Battier needs to learn how to grow 3 inches taller to play PF while also develop PG skills to be able to run the offense... That would make our team a contender :D And him the Batman

He needs to work on convincing himself to take that little jump hook about 4-5 more times a game.

you probably misunderstood what i was trying to say

i am not asking Battier to PERFECT an aspect of his game or come up with a brilliant go to move that will turn him into a superstar

I am talking about little things that he can do on the offense that is going to hlep the team

so you dont think that Battier can perfect his mid-range shot? or running around screens and taking open mid range shots like rip? you have no confidence in him?

i am not asking battier to do a 360 dunk from the freethrow line here

and he is NOT what he is....age is not really a factor as long as you put in the effort...obviusly with people like mutombo it is...but battier hasnt even turned 30
