My grandmother flew to Houston this weekend because her sister's husband has been in ICU for the past couple of weeks due to gastrointestinal problems. He's finally getting better but she'll be gone until Friday. Due to this I am taking on more responsibility than usual for Thanksgiving, well menu-wise anyway. I'm in charge of the following: Turkey (deep fried) Potato salad Green bean casserole Pumpkin pie Sweet potato pie Apple pie Banana pudding dish Usually, I just smoke/fry a turkey and I am finished but as you can see I got a few more things to deal with now. What are some things you're in charge of? PS: Anybody know how to make homemade pie crusts? My family believes they are much better than frozen/store bought.
Cause it says so in your signature? LOL jk ... because you're making Potato salad in November. I don't think I've ever been to a Thanksgiving dinner that served potato salad. No mashed potatoes and gravy?
The whole deal. Since my mom is older and my wife's aunt's are also, we've been doing the damn thang.
Buy from the store, and lie. They won't know. I used to make my the crust when I was growing up with my mom, but the premade frozen was better to me, so I use it now.
I get to do the mash potatoes with melted cheese on them. Not too big of a task. The challenge will be not eating them on the way to mom's house.
By WE do you mean you really do all the cooking or do you mean you allow other people to come to your house and eat the food your wife cooked.
There will be mashed potatoes and gravy as well but some people in our family prefer potato salad. I just listed the stuff I'm in charge of.
Graham sugarless crackers and a little bit of sugar plus butter. Mrs. SwoLy has made some crusts from scratch and they've been delicious. EDIT: this looks like the recipe for it - http://homecooking.about.com/od/pierecipes/r/blpie41.htm
Can you post steps/tips on how you're deep frying your turkey? Did you learn from the Alton Brown method?
I'm talking about mixing the dough and rolling it out. I know how to make a simple Graham cracker crust.
