I got to say that I am truly amazed at what this kid can do when he gets playing time. I am in shell shock right now. If Bryce could only step it up during his backup role, then it would be great. But it seems that Bryceroni needs to get into the flow of the game, and that requires a lot more minutes. I just dont see how we can give Bryce more minutes. A move to shooting guard won't really help because Mobes and Shandy deserve a lot of minutes. And I really don't feel good about letting someone with this much talent(supposedly), just play 15 min. a game. If he could do this while he was a backup, then I would love to keep him. It could be like John Stockon and Howard Eisley combo. When stockton goes out, and Eisley comes in, the Jazz don't really lose that much. That's why I would like to keep Drew. But at the same time, it wouldn't be fair for Drew. NOt only that, but we wouldn't be using him to his fullest. Even though the Stockton & Eisley combo. really appeals to me with Francis and Drew, I think the best course of action would be to trade him. He's been playing very well when he gets the minutes, and a lot of teams are interested. Perhaps make a trade with Walt and Bryce for someone. Even though I really like both players, Bryce won't have a big role here in Houston, so we might as well trade him. THEN AGAIN, what if Francis gets injured? Should we keep drew as an insurance policy?
How about trading Drew to Utah FOR Eisley? We get a veteran PG to back-up Stevie who has proven effective off the bench and knows how to play with Shandon. The Jazz get a future replacement starter for Stockton or Horny. Of course this is only good if Howard promises to re-sign this summer. Dan Fegan is the same agent for Anderson so maybe he'd want his players on the same team?
The success of Drew is highly indicative of the success of our new guard-oriented offense. While I don't want to downplay the ability of Drew to nail an open shot, or his Hornaceck-esque floater in the lane, Rudy has a system now that feature the PG. To me, Drew's performance validates the effectiveness of Rudy's new offense and his coaching ability to have a back-up ready to take up the point. This also points out the increased need we have for Drew. Not only is our starting PG our best player, but the PG position is our most important role. Without an adequate back-up who knows how to run all the plays, we jeopardize our offensive flow whenever the starting must sit. Personally, I do not believe Mobley is that back-up (he has his own role), Drew is that back-up. Sure, we could trade Drew, but can we allow a revolving door at backup for the quarterback? I wouldn't.
I want to get younger not older, and work on solidifying the forward positions more so than more guards. Thus I see Eisely as not fitting on both counts, I wouldn't consider him. If Utah wants to trade their first draft pick this year (Quincy Lewis) and a future #1, that I might consider.
