    Actor Heston gets 'Heston' award

Actor Charlton Heston has been given the first Charlton Heston award, a new prize handed out by the American Film Institute (AFI) saluting acting talent.

The Hollywood actor, 79, who suffers from Alzheimer's disease, received the award at his home on Tuesday.

Heston won for appearing in such films as Planet of the Apes and Ben Hur.

"For decades, he has been a major presence in movies and television around the world," said AFI board chairman Howard Stringer.

"His strong spirit of commitment to AFI lives on through this honour," Mr Stringer said.

Heston had served as the AFI's board chairman from 1971-82 and its president from 1983-2002.

    Oscars winner

The Charlton Heston award will be given periodically when the AFI finds a worthy winner.

Heston won best actor in the 1959 Oscars for his role as Ben Hur in the Roman-era adventure, and also won an honorary Oscar in 1978 for his humanitarian work.

Heston was an ardent civil rights campaigner in the 1960s, even marching with activist Martin Luther King. But in recent years he courted controversy as president of the National Rifle Association (NRA), which promotes gun ownership.

He stepped down as NRA president earlier this year, citing ill health.

Heston was recently given the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Bush, the country's highest civilian award.

Now normally, this would not be a D&D forum topic, but since Heston is controversial (especially after "Bowling for Columbine") I thought I'd put it here.

That's pretty funny -- if anybody deserves the first award, it's the guy it's named after! :)

What are people gonna argue? Are people gonna question his acting talent? I doubt it. Wrong forum.

Congrats to Heston for a long illustrious career.

You can never tell on these boards.

But hey, it's my first "wrong forum". I feel honored.

Wow. What a surprise to be brought up in a negative sense by this poster...I am so honored, I'd like to thank the Academy, etc.

Actually, when I read the intial post you were responding to, I agreed. Remember what many of Heston's movies have been about, and what my passion is. I love many of his films.

Don't be an overly sensitive sissy...I was jokingly referring to the top 4 D&D posters and tried to take 2 from each side. Haven't seen the other three whine about it yet, either :).

I bet he's a lock for the DependsĀ® Undergarment Lifetime Achievement Award too, especially if it's based on total volume.

I see from this post that my assumption that you invariably have a negative response to me was waaaay off. And unless I missed it, the other 3 weren't already in that discussion with you.

Honestly, SJC, I have noticed this for a long time. There are other posters who always respond negatively, but it's assumed; T_J, johnheath, tree, etc. because of different views. And I honestly have nothing against you as a poster, I think you're among the better posters. But it's gotten to the point where when I see your name in a thread Ive started, or responding to a post I've made, I know before reading that it''s be a criticism; of my post length, what I said, my persona, etc. There was a post a week or so back, I think in a basketball forum, where you didn't take a shot at me in your post, and I was floored...so it's not like I only see what I expect to...and with you, unlike others, there is no pre-set political/etc. disagreement which would make me expect this; it's just time and time again you take shots at me...

Like the other day when I said the commment about people not knowing I was a dual citizen, I swear on a stack of Bibles I knew what your response was before I read your words, as soon as i saw your name. If I'm lying, I hope terrible things happen to me and mine...it was that automatic.

...I am being sincere...if you have a problem with me, that's your right, and it may even be legit, I don't know. But ask yourself honestly if you can really say that I'm not picking up on something real. If, in fact, you do have a problem with me, whatever it is, maybe the fact that I'm detecting it might just mean that you're making it obvious...

I have no problem with you. Take a deep breath. Relax :D.

All I did was observe and point out obvious things (which many have done with many, one I can remember where I did that was Manny a long time ago), why do you think that if someone points out specific things it must mean that they "have a problem with you"? Did it ever occur to you that it could just be correct to point out these things and I mean well (helping to prevent you from embarrassing yourself further)? :)

To show you that in no way did I mean to hurt your feelings, I edited my post :). My choice was coincidental and just based on the first four D&D posters (2 from each side) that came to my mind. It was meant to be a joke, nothing else :).

And for what it's worth, from your posts, I think you are a really nice guy (with a somewhat frail ego, but really nice) :).
