I’m mostly using this as an excuse to post screens and animated GIFs of games that might have been missed before for some reason. Plus, I guess it is a good way of giving props to said titles and their developers. Basically, list some games that you think best signify what it means to be next-gen in terms of visuals...IOW, the games that make you say “Wow."

I’m going to list some of my favorites, although I’ll leave out some for others to mention (every game on my list is exclusive, and none are out yet, so that leaves out a lot of games). Also, for my list, I’ll make a note of whether said title is/was playable, or if what is being shown is something being done in real-time/in-game.

In no particular order, here are 5 of the best-looking next-gen titles IMO (not necessarily my top 5, but pretty close to it):

    Heavenly Sword Playable

    Metal Gear Solid 4 Real-time

If it weren't for these games and their developers, I'd think that maybe my expectations for next-gen were a bit too high.

I'll probably post some more later, although next time I'll try to pick some lesser-known titles.

That headshot probably got people to pre-order the game.

I hope the "jungle" game is typical graphics for the PS3. I'd be disappointed in their magic box if that's one of
    the better offerings.

Oh my goodness. This is the first time I see MGS4, holy crap! I am a huge MGS fan and can't wait to play it. Wasn't thinking about a PS3, maybe sometime next year.

I think you have to add Ghost Recon: AW in here. This game looks amazing as well.

    How is that even possible?

But to answer the original question, some games that haven't been mentioned yet that I think look really nice are Turok, Unreal 2007, Army of Two, Crysis, and Kane & Lynch.

I prefer to focus on stuff that actually is out there to play or at least in demo form or something so that we know for a fact what it looks like with controller in hand.

Hell, even Gears Of War, which is out in two months, has hardly given up a lot of gameplay video.

Having said that, I agree with Rocketeer that Ghost Recon has to be up there, as does Fight Night. And of what I played of Lost Planet, it should definitely be up there.

Well, I've read stuff about it and seen screenshots but this is the first time I see game footage.

Eh...I think it looks good, but it isn't quite up to par, at least compared to the best of the best. The gameplay mechanics really intrigue me, but the visuals don't really grab my attention. They didn't really make me say "Wow" or anything like that...more like "That looks nice I guess." Just above the bare minimum of what I expected from next-gen...although some games are forcing me to lower my minimum expectations for next-gen visuals.

I suppose that could change as Insomniac shows more of the game, but I doubt it will be on the same level as some of these other games (IMO anyway).

If you're interested, I can try to hunt down some links to some of the other trailers Konami has released. There's like 20+ minutes worth of video from MGS4, ~15M just from the E3 trailer. That trailer, in HD, takes up 1GB.

Good choices. If you don't feel like it, I might post some additional screens or movies on those games (don't think I have any GIFs for those though...I need to learn how to make them).

I think I have a ton of gameplay footage from Gears over the past year or so. I think the first time I saw it, they were showing gameplay. Of course, a lot of those videos were early on, and had a few issues (framerate and animation issues, which I think they fixed judging from the E3 gameplay videos).

Now that I think about it though, most/all of them weren't really "official" media. Mostly just cam footage taken from different presentations, some of which was probably taken down shortly after hitting the net (though I was quick enough to get it).

Konami has yet to show any gameplay from MGS4 (hoping it will be playable at TGS in a few weeks, but may have to wait until 07 sometime).

If you've played previous MGS games though, you can probably get an idea on what to expect. Unlike other devs, Kojima and his crew do not use prerendered video for MGS (or their other games IIRC). All of it is done in real-time through the game engine. The game usually ends up looking pretty close to the cutscenes (usually missing that cinematic feel due to the camera and things like that).

For example, comparisons from MGS2 and MGS3:

    MGS 3 cutscene
    [IMG]
    MGS 3 gameplay
    [IMG]

    MGS 2 Cutscene
    [IMG]
In any case, I expect MGS4 to be one of the, if not the, best looking games on a next-gen console, and that’s both from a gameplay perspective and a real-time/in-game perspective (even though the gameplay hasn't been shown yet).

Okay how come in these fight games you see sword slash someone and they flip over but they are not in two pieces?

Probably to avoid being rated M, along with other reasons I guess.

I guess if they had all these violent shots it would be x rated, I am sure someone will come out with these games in the future. Maybe it would be some Asian game designers that start the trend, not sure I would want to see body parts flying every where though. :p

Nice screens. Here are some videos for some of those games, which are a little more difficult to find:

Kane and Lynch Video from GC (most places have removed this since it wasn't supposed to be put online):
    http://rapidshare.de/files/32048860/derek85_kl.avi.html

    Multiple videos for Crysis.
    ~14 Minute demonstration from E3:
    http://www.worthdownloading.com/download.php?gid=1724&id=7831
Multiplayer videos and more from Gamespy (from the GC IIRC):
    http://media.pc.gamespy.com/media/694/694190/vids_1.html
    Some videos from Gamespot:
http://www.gamespot.com/pc/action/crysis/media.html?mode=all (some of the newer ones I think are only at GS...not sure though)

UT2K7 HD Trailer from the GC:
    http://www.playsyde.com/news_3332_en.html

I don't believe there have been any videos for Turok or Army of Two (except for the 5-6 second EA montage from E3 I think…which could have been CG). BTW, I didn't really check those links very well since I already downloaded most of the videos (except for Crysis), so let me know if any of them have problems.

BTW, I'm not sure how you were assigning the platforms for those games, but it is likely that each of them may end up on both the 360 and PS3 a la Assassin's Creed. Only exception would be Crysis since it is a PC game, but they will be porting their engine to both platforms, allowing for console versions of that game or others. Basically, if anyone already has a 360 or is planning on getting a 360/PS3, they'll probably get to play each of those games on whatever platform they pick. So no one has to buy a PS3 in order to play Army of Two or anything like that (especially since EA is publishing the title).

I chose the platforms based on what IGN says. For example, with Turok it didn't say "Also on: xxxxxx". For games like Unreal, if you go look at the PC page, it will say "Also on: Xbox 360, PS3".
