What albums/bands never quite made it that should have?

I'm not talking about bands that are good musically, but don't have mainstream appeal. Rather, what are some bands that SOUND like they'd really take off, and are radio-friendly, but just never sell well for some strange reason that you can't fathom?

    My ideas:

    Band: Marvelous 3

These guys are extremely catchy, have great hooks, and have quirky, smart lyrics. Their song "Freak of the Weak" seems extremely radio friendly to me, and I don't know why it never got more play. They're a college radio station favorite, but never went mainstream. On their recent album, I thought sugarbuzz and track #3 would be on the charts. Nope

    Album: Smashing Pumpkins, Machina

I liked Adore, but realized that it wasn't going to sell the day I popped it into my CD player. When I got machina the first day of its release, I thought "the Pumpkins are back." It was hard rock, a bit of a combination of Gish and Melancholy. Really compelling stuff. In fact, I thought that the songs "I of the the Mourning" and "Stand inside your love" would re-establish their place as a pre-eminent rock band, although perhaps not their Melanchollie-era status.

Nope. Whoever bought the album seemed to like it, but it didn't get much play and not that many people bought it.

    haven,

    I've got a good one!

    4 non blondes!

That song off of "Bigger, Better, Faster, More!", "What's Up" was a great song.

I saw them play in a bar in Miami in the early 90s and I thought "now here's a band that's gonna be huge!

    But after that album, nothing!

    Strange

Only one I can think of at the moment is PM Dawn.

One of my best friends is actually married to the sister of the lead singer of 4 Non Blondes... I've met her and she's very very cool in person... And I think I can shed some light on this issue...

Aparently, the other 3 Blondes were very very bad in terms of work ethic and committment to the band... She wrote almost all the songs and music, and the others were just trying to tag along for the ride... mooching of the success and everything...

So finally she just got burnt out and they broke up... Kind of sad, but she's really happy with her life now...

Kind of got tired of all the pressure of success, ya know?

    Anyway.. just letting you know...

    4 non-blonded was a great band?!?

Whatever! Their only hit was a "Don't worry, be happy" knock-off.

Thought this band was a one hit wonder the first time I saw the video.

    Guess I was right.

FYI -- The lead singer for 4 Non Blondes died. That's why they stopped playing.

I'll try to contribute more to this thread later...

    Beware the Green Monkey.

A college band in Manchester England, that was on the verge of signing a recording deal when inner strife broke them up.

I have a CD of their song....they were AWESOME songwriters and musicians.

Marvelous 3 and King's X are both freaking awesome. M3's "Hey Album" is my favorite album of all-time. I have like 700 CDs, and that one is my favorite by a pretty good margin.

Living Colour is good too, River, although I didn't know you were such a rocker. :)

I don't understand why Type O Negative isn't bigger. They totally blow away any heavy band out there right now (probably other than Tool). Danzig too.

For 80s bands, Tesla and Saigon Kick should've been bigger.

I love the fact that I don't have to overhear most of my music (e.g. at the gym w/ a bunch of fake boobies bouncing to it) but there are some bands that left WAY too soon.

Blightobody (really fun college rock; you may have seen them on the Conan O'Brien show, or touring through the southeast if you had the chance), My Bloody Valentine(their later music was melodic ass splitting)... and Belltower(the same) seriously left my mouth agape when they split up or retired.

The Innocence Mission is thankfully still around, but they never tour (that I'm aware of) and are hardly known. If you get a chance to listen to them, a lot, you'll wonder why they never found the Sundays niche.

And of course I cried like a baby when the Cocteau Twins broke up a few months after I waived my chance to see them in Atlanta ( just to hang out w/ a stupid girl ). They might have 'made it' though, I'm not really sure.

My wife is vibing me for not working, so I'll finish this later.

Toadies never got popular, everyone has heard Possum Kingdom but no one knows who the band is! I think Weezer's second CD Pinkerton is underated, its an incredible CD with no hit radio singles thus no one really bothered with it. Pinkerton is one of those few albums where you don't hit skip. I too liked Machina, the Pumpkins failed to w**** themselves and the album was lost in the current stream of crap. Did they even push for more than 2 singles off that CD? Geezus music sucks now.

Sonic Youth-their <I>Dirty</I> album is on my top 10 of all-time.

Matthew Sweet-got some pub as one of the starters of alternative rock, but his last few albums have been outstanding, especially <I>In Reverse</I>.

    G. Love and Special Sauce-just plain fun music, a little rap, a little rock, a little ska, a little reggae, he's awesome.

Widespread Panic-a jam band along the lines of Phish or The String Cheese Incident, but unlike those two, in my opinion, they have more radio friendly songs. Check out <I>Til the Medicine Takes</I> and <I>Bombs and Butterflies</I>.

Man, DarkHorse, I don't know where the heck I got that from, but I checked a few sites, and all indications are that she is in fact still alive, like you say. "I'm r****ded...I..."

Type O Negative's weird... I think their real problem is that they don't have a single market to call their own.

I like some of their stuff, but can't stand other parts of it. Since I listen to albums generally, and not songs, that means I never bought any of it. I did cheat, I admit, and download 3 of their songs on mp3. Sue me ;).
