Could be a great starting PF for the Rockets. Would be enough for the MLE or a sign-and-trade? Anything is possible....

Gooden plenty of talks, just unproductive ones

CLEVELAND -- Unless things turn around quickly, Drew Gooden could be playing for another team next year.

Talks between his agent, Calvin Andrews, and the Cavaliers have started to break down.

''We're trying to see if any sign-and-trades work,'' Andrews said. ''We are trying to exhaust every avenue. We're working through some different things.''

The Cavaliers told Andrews to be patient while they were working on LeBron James' three-year contract extension. Now, it's Gooden's turn, and apparently he's the main focus of their attention.

The 6-foot-10, 242-pounder is a restricted free agent. He wants to remain in Cleveland. Andrews said a sign-and-trade might be the answer.

''I think it's a very feasible route,'' he said.

Of course, all would be well in Gooden's world if the Cavaliers make an offer to his liking, but that's not been the case.

''They have not made an offer yet,'' Andrews said. ''Maybe they are holding out on something. We're being patient and working with them. We respect what they're trying to do. We'll follow their lead.

''They can make an offer he likes. That's what he would prefer. Drew wants to stay in Cleveland. If they make an offer that makes sense, we'll do it. If a sign-and-trade makes more sense, we'll do that. We're not ready to hit the panic button.''

The few teams that have money remaining don't have a crying need for a power forward. He might have to take a mid-level offer (starting at $5.2 million) or accept the Cavaliers' qualifying offer ($5.4 million) and become an unrestricted free agent after this season. Andrews said earlier that taking the qualifying offer will be their last resort.

    Drew Gooden: Seeking Sign-and-Trade?

    RotoWire.com Staff - RotoWire.com
    Thursday, July 13, 2006

Update: Gooden's representatives may explore a sign-and trade in order to get what they believe is Gooden's market value, the Akron Beacon Journal reports.

Recommendation: The Cavs and Gooden's reps disagree widely in their perceptions of the player's worth. The Cavs see him as an important, hard-working role-player, while Gooden believes that his numbers don't indicate how valuable he is, especially given the decrease in his playing time to Donyell Marshall and Anderson Varejao. As stated previously, however, Gooden is not expected to gain much leverage from testing the open market.

The Cavaliers have no use for Juwan Howard and we need (near starter level) perimeter depth a lot more than another PF.

Maybe they could be coaxed into taking Juwan in a sign and trade, if we take Damon Jones off their hands in a separate deal for our Trade Exception?

That would be awesome if CD could pull that off and still have the MLE to split on 2 FA's such as Banks and Ariza

You have a point...but it has two embedded questions...

    1) Since it's two for one and we are supposedly getting the starter, they'll ask for a 1st Round pick. Do you do it?

    2) How much do the VG Rockets value both of these players? IMHO, not very highly.

I think that it might not be a bad idea. I really believe that we could use a young power forward, as I'm not sure that Howard will hold up through the seasons quite as well as he has been recently. If we could get Damon Jones, that would definitely help our shooting, we all remember how much of a cold-blooded shooter he was in Miami a few years ago. As for Drew Gooden, the guy is capable of numbers, he's a role player that has the ability to step up, and his defense and rebounding are much better than Howard's.

I'd consider tossing in a first rounder as long as it is Top 20 protected in 2007, Top 15 in 2008 and Top 8 in 2009. That would give us time to get a second first rounder in order to surrender the worse of the two.

I believe Gooden could blossom if paired with Yao Ming. He has shown some promise, but overall he is an underachiever.

I just noticed in another thread that the Cavs are interested in signing David Wesley. Can we sign and trade Wesley + Howard + trade exception in a packaged deal for Gooden and one of Newble/Jones/Pavlovic.

Please don't sign Drew Gooden, his numbers might be decent, but he's not the type of guy we need. He doesn't like to play defense or rebound, one of his old coaches had said that Gooden could lead the league in rebounds if he wanted to but he doesn't, all he wants is to score points. We need a guy who can do the dirty work and the little things kind of like Shane Battier.

that's exactly what gooden does. He'll get a few putback, not too many points but he rebousnd on both ends of the court. He is also much bigger than JHO.

Thumbs, you aren't a n00b. I think it's been mentioned about 1,293 times this summer that you can't combine a TE and a player in a trade. :(

But if we can manage to dump Howard and pick up Gooden, I'd be all for that. If nothing else, we can stop hearing everybody moan on the BBS about Juwan Howard. :)

I just dont understand why do you guys want players like Gooden or Wilcox. They are all Swift 2.0: underachieve, inconsistent and unmotivated. After swift's experiment, do you really think this kind of players will work well with JVG? Either they will play behind Jho if he's still here or we'll sign charles oakley in the mid-season to replace them as starter. So what's the point to sign these guys? To waste another draft pick next season so that we can move their contract?

You are correct. I just saw the Wesley thread and rushed to amend my earlier post. Call it an act of unthinking desperation. ;)

You know what? This might actually work... It's less of a pipedream than bringing in Stephen Jackson or Bonzi Wells with the same concept anyways.

If talks really stall between the 2, maybe the Rockets can swoop in and get Gooden for Howard (our cast-off) and Damon Jones (their cast-off) for Luther Head (plus maybe cash and/or picks). Even a SnT for Wesley could work in there somehow, now that we know they're interested in acquiring a vet 2... Plus, we'd still have the full MLE and both TEs for FA bench players. Gooden may not be an "enforcer" at the 2, but is pretty tough, young, durable, plays D, and can hit the mid-range jumper if left open, FT% sucks though (mid-60s)...

    10/10 player in our offense?

    Yao/Deke
    Gooden/Novak/Hayes
    Battier/R.Butler/Bowen
    T-Mac/F.Jones
    Alston/D.Jones/JL III
