if we're talking best pgs in college basketball I think an argument can be made for him. He always stays calm and under control, finishes in traffice better then any pg, sees the court amazingly, and has a great basketball IQ. His weakness is obviously his jumper. I would love to have him if he comes out and he may slip to the end of the first round (or allow somebody like Law 4 (not 3) ) to slip to us.
Watching him right now, his ability to switch gears and to draw fouls is simply INCREDIBLE. Sadly, not the kind of PG the Rockets need. He needs the ball ALOT to be effective and his weak jump shot is a major weakness in the JVG-offense (?) system. Still, I'd love to see him in the NBA.
I love his ability to drive, finish and create. He has great instincts, protects the ball and brings a ton of intangibles to that team. He's definitely not your typical college PG that does nothing but chuck three pointers up all game. Very solid player but I can't picture any NBA team taking him before Acie Law.....
Depends. A ton of teams will feel they can fix his jumper (this always happens). I wouldn't take him over Law 4 if I was choosing but the fact that he's a Freshman and will get better will be intriguing to more then a few teams. He would definitely fit on the Rockets. People are complaining that Rafer shouldn't take more then 9 or 10 shots a game, well Im sure Conley can be effective doing that and distributing the ball.
What Conley has done as a freshman is remarkable but Law would be so much better of a fit on the Rockets. Law's combination of size, skill, shooting, basketball IQ and overall game is pretty much exactly what a team like the Rockets need at the point. He's so much more NBA ready too. If the Chauncey Billups comparisons are even anywhere remotely close -- sign me up. Too bad for us he'll be a lotto pick. Conley wouldn't be a bad consolation prize though...
I like Conley a lot. He will be a very good starting PG in the NBA. Law is more of a finished product but Conley may end up better at the next level.
The Billups comparison is mostly due top their clutch shooting. Other then that, Law 4 and Billups aren't really similar. Law 4 is Law 4. I'd prefer him too but like many have acknowleged, it isn't going to happen. I wouldn't be so sure that if Conley left he wouldn't be the first pg to go (I'm, not saying he should). However, he's already remarkably polished and he's a Freshman. He leads OSU, not Oden. The "potential" factor might convince a team to take him over the more polished Law 4.
Conley is not NBA material at this point. He has no idea how to use his big man and get the ball on the interior. Guys that can dribble around and fire a jump shot are a dime a dozen. He missed open entry after open entry today.
KAS13, I have to admit i'm starting to buy into your idea that he could possibly be the first PG taken in the draft. I know it's only the first half of the Georgetown game but he's been the best player on the floor and is controlling everything on both ends of the floor. He's controlling the game the same way and is reminding me a lot of Marcus Williams and the way he played in the tourney last year. He's a bit smaller but is definitely quicker, penetrates better and seems to play with more energy. Do you see this comparison also?
1. He can't shoot 3's: this is ESSENTIAL to playing with Yao. This alone should make it clear that he's not right for the Rockets system. 2. He can't throw a decent post entry pass: another essential skill needed to play with Yao. If he can't do those things, he's just not right for the Rockets. I love his game, but it doesn't fit in.
Conley has a tremendous upside. It may take a couple of years but I believe he will make an impact in the NBA.
He is the best player on the Ohio State team. Its just too bad that he gets overshadowed by Oden's hype.
I think its a hit or miss. He can capitalize on the fact that his stock is inflated after getting Ohio State into the finals, or risk sucking it up next year and lose the mystique about his game. I say he should come out this year.
Both Conley and Law are at the worst a low teens pick. Highly unlikely either of them are around when our pick comes.
Conley definitely won't be around if he comes out. To answer baller4life's question, he has had a very similar tourney to the one Marcus Williams had last season. I think his 3 pt shooting can improve and his ability to get to the basket, run an offense in score in the paint is amazing. His poise is something that you can't teach and when was the last time you saw a pg change directions with the ball that quick? It's hilarious to watch people hate on him.
