Now I realize that we have a ton of guards on our roster, but we really only have one "true" point guard on the team, and that is Mike James (Moochie and Ward don't count in my book). I like Mike James, but he tends to dribble the ball a little too much and somewhat of a "shoot-first" point guard (although I have no problem at all with that if he's coming off the bench and we need a scoring boost). I have read lots of posters mentioning Damon S, but what about Brevin Knight? The guy averaged 10 points and 9 assists last year on a struggling Bobcats team. He is a pass first point guard that hustles. I realize the downsides to his game are that he really has no outside shot and is somewhat injury prone (and is short). But I wouldn't mind using the LLE on him, freeing us up to trade some of our guards. Thoughts? Apologies if there is a thread about this buried in the forum...
I like the idea of getting Brevin Knight. I believe he is the pass first point guard that the Rockets need. Sura and James tend to look for their shot first (James moreso than Sura), Brevin would make our offense flow smoother and make Tmac's job a lot easier on offense. The only thing that worries me about Knight is that he put up good numbers on an awful team. Only time will tell if he can duplicate or at least come close to putting up those numbers on a good team.
I've liked Knight as a pg for years. I can pretty much guarantee though that people won't want him because he doesn't have the ideal body type to fit what they want a pg to be. I think Charlotte would be competitive on price, unless the contract was long.
There is zero chance Brevin Knight could beat out Mike James as a starting point. He's a functional backup point guard, and only started because he played for the Bobcats.
I've always liked Knight, and I still think he could be a great asset to our team despite his obvious drawbacks (height, being injury-prone, no range), because he might just be the best passing point guard in the league, other than Nash and Kidd. However, I think he will get more than the LLE from the Bobcats.
I've been advocating for Brevin to become a Rocket for a long time. He's a pure point guard, and we do need one. But don't look to him for soli perimeter defense. He gets a lot of steals but gets them by gambling a lot. I don't know how we thin the PG rotation to get Brevin. But I would like to see him or White Chocolate in a Rockets uniform this coming season.
Bejezus, Oh puh-leeze. Brevin led or was second in the league in assists one year. As a starter. He is a proven quality; it's just that his height always makes his teams look for a bigger PG. Mike James should always come off the bench because he's a scorer, not a ball distributor. -P1st, S2nd.
How could you possibly suggest someone who was 42-17 as a starting point guard? Don't you know we're going for 60 wins? A 58 win pace just isn't good enough.
he's a tough mutha. that's why i love him. plus, it would break my 5 year old son's heart to not have bobby sura on the rox next season. he flashes me the upside down "ok" symbol that bob and barry threw around so much during the playoffs as i leave the house each morning. he wants to meet bob sura and shake his hand.
We all love Sura but his injuries and age scare some of us. Brevin Knight would be a good backup PG for the Rockets. I wouldn't object to getting him at the right price. This would also mean we traded Mike James for an upgrade at starting PG or SG.
I'd rather have James as a back-up. I'd rather have Sura as a starter. I'd even more rather have Stoudamire as a starter (with James as the back-up and Sura as the starting 2). Knight is not a bad player, but he hurts our perimeter shooting and makes our back-court even smaller in one stroke. He would have helped a lot last year before the James trade, not now.
Knight's not just injury prone, he's missed an average of 25 games a season the past five years. C'mon guys. That's approaching Marcus Camby levels.
I agree with the fact that you should worry about him scoring ten poiints on a bad team but having nine assist s game tells me this guy can pass the rock on any team not to mention Houston has shooters better than Charlotte despite losing to them twice this season. He may not be the best choice but with him you know exactly what your getting a very good distributor of the rock a mediocore scorer and a solid defender.
I was talking about as a backup and for little money. I think a combo of James/Knight with Sura at the two would work...
