First of all a belated Merry Christmas to all! You never expect it to happen to you, you always think it only happens to "those other people" never you. I'm off to bed right, because my family had gotten me some gifts, and I might be in my mid-20s, but h*ll yeah I'm excited about gifts! Well I'm staying with my mother for these holidays along with my mother and sister and I'm sleep. It's about 6 a.m. Christmas morning and suddenly I smell this really bad odor, and I'm thinking "great my sister is burning something", so I stick my head under my covers and the smell is still strong. Suddenly I here somebody screaming my name faintly, get up and I hear people telling me to get out of the house. I'm freaking out at this point and I head out into the hall way and get a wiff of smoke. "CRAP the house is burning!" I'm thinking while throwing on clothes and my coat! I run outside with my family and the police come and the fire department takes their sweet time getting there. Comes to find out while I had some clothes drying the dryer jammed somehow and the head built up until my clothes caught on fire and the fire was burning in the freaking dryer. So you can imagine my joy literally standing in 20 degree weather while watching the dryer dragged out in front of the house, and my clothes, shorts, shirts, sheets and underwear and all dragged out in the snow and the fire department spraying all kind of stuff on it and putting it out. That's always fun. And the house stunk for the next couple of days. Half burnt clothes, especially YOUR half burnt clothes is never fun. Anyway, it could have been MUCH worse, and I'm thankful that it was only the dryer and a few articles of clothes that were burned. Especially since a house near me burned to the ground and there were people in serious condition in the hospital. I hope you guys have a safe holiday, and appreciate it because anything can happen, I found that out the hard way.
Wow, glad everything turned out OK! Thanks for sharing the story. So many of us think that our house won't be the one to burn down...it's important to hear stories like this that keep people aware. Could you imagine if you had left the dryer on while you went out for dinner?
Thanks Cohen, that's what I have been thinking. What if I were out at dinner, or visiting a friend or a relative, or out getting presents and was gone for several hours. Anything could have happened. Just scary to think about. And of all things a dryer catching fire, the last thing would have thought about catching fire.
Was it an electric or gas dryer? Crazy story. Your the one in one million to have this happen to them. You might as well have won the lottery.
RocksMill, That is an awful thing to have happen, especially at Christmas! Glad to hear that you and your family is okay.
