Several Westbury High School students were arrested this afternoon after a brawl involving Hurricane Katrina evacuees, according to Houston Independent School District officials.

"There was a fight that broke out in the cafeteria between some girls and it spread outside," said HISD spokewsoman Adriana Villarreal. "The only injury we know of so far is one child that had a minor laceration under their eye."

Westbury, located in southwest Houston, has nearly 2,500 students, including 300 from Louisiana.

Villarreal said she did not yet know how many students were arrested or what they were fighting about.

HOUSTON -- Thirty students were arrested Wednesday after a large brawl breaks out into several scuffles between girls from New Orleans and Houston during lunch at a southwest Houston high school, KPRC Local 2 reported.

Officers with the Houston Police Department and the Houston Independent School District brought the fight at Westbury High School, 11911 Chimney Rock Road, under control at about 12:40 p.m.

Authorities said a large brawl started inside the school's cafeteria at about 12:10 p.m. Shortly thereafter, hundreds of students rapidly spilled out of a door near the cafeteria and several small fights began outside the school.

The melee grew from one fight to other fights involving students throughout the school.

HISD spokesman Terry Abbot said no weapons were involved in the fights, and that he suspects it was mostly fist fights.

The only injury reported as of 3 p.m. was one female student who sustained a laceration under her eye.

All students not involved in the fights were kept in classrooms to ensure their safety.

Houston police arrested 30 students -- 15 students from the Houston area and 15 students from the New Orleans area displaced by Hurricane Katrina.

All of the students face charges of disruption of school activities.

Abbott told KPRC Local 2 that a female student from Houston is accused of assaulting two Houston police officers. She has been charged with a Class A misdemeanor.

Of the 15 Houston students arrested, 12 were boys and two were girls. Thirteen girls and two boys from New Orleans were arrested.

Twenty of the students were charged as juveniles while eight others were charged as adults. The classification for the remaining two has not been released.

Police released the juveniles to their parents. Students whose parents do not pick them up will be placed in the custody of Child Protective Services.

The students charged as adults, who are 17 or older, were taken to the Southeast Jail.

HISD has taken in more than 5,000 students displaced by Katrina. Three hundred of those students attend Westbury.

Abbott said this is the 12th or 13th fight involving Katrina evacuees since they started attending HISD schools.

Last Thursday the school held a forum with parents and students on to discuss how the two groups could get along better.
