Were the Rockets starting Rafer to showcase him for trade purposes?

Somehow, in the back of my mind, Adelman and Morey knew that Brooks would become the starter, but they couldn't afford to start Brooks because they needed to showcase Rafer for trade purposes.

Brooks has been getting increased playing time since his form returned, and when Rafer was in a mini slump a few weeks ago, Adelman even allowed Brooks to finish the game in the 4th quarter.

The Rafer trade would never have been made if Adelman weren't confident in starting Brooks. Well, it seems Adelman is confident with starting Brooks but he may have been instructed by Morey to continue to start Rafer so Rafer would be an asset for the trading deadline. With the minutes Brooks has been getting lately, I guess Rockets management are happy with having Brooks as their main PG.

4 years is a hell of a long showcase.

The only thing I know is that Magic and SVG is so so happy to get Alston from us

You could do a search, but it'd probably break the server! ;)

Some of us are very happy about this move.

I would not be surprised if what you mentioned was a factor. I think brooks is as good if not better then Tony Parker was when he first came into the league at the age of 19.

No one though Tony was ready in the beginning to start for the spurs but he was. I think we will be saying the same thing about brooks.

Love your opinion Clutch. I'm with you about finally getting rid of Alston. He is a great guy, nothing against him, but he has been hurting our team a lot more than helping it. His inconsistencies were extremely difficult to deal with.

Rafer is a legit starting PG. There is no other reason Orlando would have taken him. You don't need to "showcase" a PG to a team like that, his playoff performances speak for themselves.

I think McGrady's ineffectiveness this season played a huge part in the decision.

Losing Mcgrady as their go to perimeter guy changed what they need out of their PG. They can no longer afford to have the least efficient shooter in the league manning the point no matter how well he does everything else. We simply need more scoring punch on the perimeter with McGrady being done. As good as Wafer has been at times, he isn't proven enough to where they are confident he'll replace McGrady's 20+ ppg. Barry is too old to count on for 30 mpg and he's really only a spot up shooter. He doesn't score in other ways (slashing, getting to the line, etc...).

Alston wasn't likely a long-term solution in anybody's eyes so now was as good a time as any to make the change.

Brooks is in his second year. First as a potential starter buddy!

If this was not written as a joke and was meant to be serious, you need to have your account suspended and please never get into a basketball discussion ever again.

    Showcasing is a myth.

We started Rafer, played him 37 minutes a game for four years for a reason. He was better. I predict, without him, the Rockets offense will struggle mightily and the defense will suffer as well. The ball will have a hard time getting to Yao. There will be no sense of direction on the court. Turnovers will go up, assists down. And who will make those clutch 3s in the 4th? I am vehemently against this trade. Absolutely horrible.

We have plenty of shooters for the fourth quarter. Shane, Barry, Brooks, etc. The defense has been suffering mightily all season long. Rafer hasn't been a huge difference maker. Shane, Ron and Barry are usually pretty good about getting the ball to Yao (although I will admit, Brooks and his stupid bounce passes to Yao are annoying). We'll find a sense of direction. I doubt the Rockets make this trade if they feel neither Brooks nor Lowry can truly be the point guards of this team.

    Rafer's career playoff statistics:

    33 games
    22.8 mpg
    6.8 ppg
    2.3 apg
    2.5 rpg
    34.6 FG%
    30.5 3PT%
    77.8 FT%
45 FTAs total in 754 minutes (roughly 22 games so he got to the line about twice per playoff game )

I think the rockets have been looking for an opportunity to get rid of Rafer since last season and they finally found something that wasn't much of a gamble and could have huge upside.
Remember Jerry west drafted Lowry And thought he was going to be their startin point for years to come once he developed . But once West left the Grizz as Gm well we all know what happened to that team.

    JERRY WEST KNOWS TALENT!
