Honestly Im not trying to be bias as a Rocket fan but to me the refs were not great but pretty fair throughout the game. Im really having a hard time understanding why Blazers and their media felt the refs were giving us the calls. I know they arent completly blaming the refs for the blowout but they do make it sound that Rockets got the calls. To me it was just tough playoff defense and the refs gave fouls and sometimes letting some go to both teams and were not favoring one. Yes there were some bad calls but on both sides which was fair and all I really could ask for. NBA refs do suck but at the same time no doubt its a hard job due to the NBA pace and we as fans don't expect them to call it 100% correct. We can only expect them to be close 95% and not determine the outcome of a game. However this game the refs weren't biased just made some bad calls but on both ends. To me the complaining seems more like the Blazers were just mad that they couldnt get Yao fould out of the game which seemed like their only game plan. And by doing so they looked for contact on offense diving into the lane looking for a foul throwing up shots (which is what they are suppose to do, I would. But if Yao keeps his hands up strait up it shouldnt be called) and flopped a lot on defense. And we were agressive hands on d but this is playoff NBA bball. Yao was in a bit of foul trouble and thank god we weren't in a close game because if we were and needed Yao more, there would had been a chance that Yao would had fouled out with a lot of time in a close game, hence us losing instead of winning. Yao definitly needs to be careful about his fouls in the future games and continue his dominance for us to get out. I'm expecting the front comming up in the future games and we need to have a answer. As far as game one seems like Portland just trying to give some kind of excuse although they cant and are only some what admitting it. Great win, now lets take game two and put them more on a edge.
I'm watching the game again right now. NO. Both team got good calls, bad calls. Portland didn't take it to the basket as much as the Rockets. We gave them chances to come back but they missed their shots and started jawing to the officials.
Well the refs were okay...they even miss some calls like Rudy Fernandez charging into Yao and they called that on Yao...that is wrong! And Roy pushing away Battier for an open shot..they didn't called that either. And some player charging into Aaron, they didn't call that either.
good point. Even if we played an additional quarter and just played defense and held the ball until the shot clock expired every time (went scoreless)- they would have still lost.
look at the game stats. the number of calls on each team they whistled was about even. it's an overall fairly ref'ed game.
Its not a foul if the big man goes straight up with his hands straight up and the offensive player runs smack into him. Even inside the semicircle. This isnt 2005, you wont get a bailout simply for crashing into the big man. Its taken the league 2 years to get it right(was supposed to be in place beginning of 2007-08 season) but thats how its supposed to be. So no, the officiating was pretty even, based on bad calls one way versus the other. However, the 2nd and 4th fouls on Yao were pretty lame and that would have had a serious impact on a close game. Fortunately for Houston they made sure that bad calls werent an issue.
Those Blazer fans must forget what it's like to play against the Jazz. Be glad they aren't in a series in Utah. Some Blazer fans might have killed themselves in the stands. To answer the question, no. There were no blatant calls in that game (other than the Yao blocking foul that was a charge) that made a difference. Roy was throwing himself into traffic a lot and screaming at the refs hoping to get calls, though. But you don't get blown out by 25+ for most of the game and think it's the refs' fault.
well, i remember a bad call for us: when Yao got called for the blocking foul on Rudy, that was clearly wrong, since he had his feet set, and was outside the circle~
It was a 55 to 45% fairness to the Rockets. There were some bad calls, but they did attempt to make some makeup calls. Refs can't make you score 27 more points.
I don't know if they were unfair, but there was a series of charging/blocking calls during the 2nd quarter that was pretty maddening. It seemed like the refs called charges when they should have been blocks and vice versa (I don't remember the exact players involved), and both teams seemed befuddled on what exactly was what.
You are probably young. Well, let me tell you that there are people who will go to great lengths to make up excuses and insist on stories and rationalizations in order to make themselves look and feel better. I'm pretty sure a lot of them don't really believe it. But this is sort of escapist fantasy. Basketball is entertainment.
