I started thinking about what other religions might think of what we Catholics or overall Christians follow as rules... I am not saying they're right or wrong, just that they seem weird to others. I am prompted to do a "what weird religious rules are there?" thread because I saw the "toilet faces mecca" thread in the D&D. Let's not talk about whether it's right or wrong, but that it seems weird. For example: CHRISTIAN: no eating meat on Good Friday and Fridays through lent. Why? Does something happen to our bodies if we DO eat it? I bet this was started by Long John Silver's Restaurants. MUSLIM: no facing Mecca when you go to the bathroom. Why? last (but not least) SCIENTOLOGY: you have to eat the placenta after your baby's birth. (eww) Who thinks up these rules? Anyway, I would rather not drag this into the D&D, just some that are weird to me could be weird to you, too.
Why can't folx smoke mar1juana. . . this seems like another attempt to belittle religion every thing and every institution has rules or guidelines Rocket River
EDIT: Once again, this isn't a "WHY?" or "I think this is WRONG" thread, I am just saying these laws and rules are weird, even the ones I practice. Rocket River, what religion doesn't let you smoke mar1juana? It's weird that it's only "red meat". What about FISH? I think it's weird that you CAN eat that. MORMONS: can't drink coffee. This one's weird.
Caffeine is considered an addictive substance I believe, which is why they are not allowed to partake of it.
what ever y'all do here. Becareful what you say about Mormons. That is all I am going to say about that.
are you mormon by any chance? Dude, don't take this too seriously, lighten up. I was going to post a pic of Shawn Bradley under Tracy McGrady but I reconsidered it.
Let me put your mind at ease: it's NOT a rule and has no basis in the religion. As for the "why", it's sort of irrelevant in this case if "toilets facing Mecca" has no theological relevance or significance.
what about people who follow pentecostal religion thing. One of my dearly beloved friends is pentecoastal. They have to wear skirts/dresses all the time. What's up with that. I remember when she used to wear it short, now she wears it around her knees. That pisses me off. I've seen her in jeans/pants only twice.
Clutch is Mormon? Cool! Do we have any other Mormons on the board? We need to have a "what's your religion" thread, it would be nice to see just how diverse the BBS is.
My only peeve with that is that one of my friends was HAWT too when I was in high school, and she said she couldn't wear pants... but oh, man, how I liked that RULE... some of those skirties DID look great on her. Yeeoowwwrrrll. tiger, could you show me somewhere where it states that it's not a rule? And why is it cool that Clutch is Mormon? You wouldn't think he's cool otherwise? You're so superficial, yo.
Not sure how I can prove a negative, but let's just say that there are no rules regarding facing Mecca while sh***ing Heh! Not at all, I just love diversity and I love having more diverse views on this BBS. We have people from various Protestant denominations, Catholics, Jews, Muslims, Mormons, Athiests, Agnostics, etc...I think it's cool.
I don't think that's a rule accepted by all Mormons. I went to high school in Utah and knew a lot of Mormons, very few of whom avoided caffeine.
I think Swoly-D is talking more about the "rules" aspect of religion and not necessarily what its followers adhere to or ignore.
actually you are incorrect my tiger friend... there are two opinions one saying that you should not face the qiblah (kaabah/makkah) when using the restroom. another opinion says that as long as there is a barrier between you and the kaabah ie a wall, or as long as you arent relieving yourself in the open then you can face whereever you wish to face. if you want daleel, lemme know, and i will provide you with the links.
I guess I'll step in on this one since I'm Mormon. The specific "rule" comes from what we call the Word of Wisdom. It's essentially a health code that we live by outlining things that are good to eat and things that aren't. For instance, it encourages eating your veggies and says that meat is okay as long as you don't go crazy. Among the things you're not supposed to use are tobacco (no smoking), alcohol (no drinking), and "hot drinks", which we have been told is in specific reference to coffee and tea. Most people draw the line between coffee and tea and assume that the principle behind the whole "hot drinks" thing is to avoid caffeine. Overall though, the prevailing theme of the "things not to eat or use" seems to revolve around things that lead to addiction. Caffeine is certainly an addictive substance, albeit less potent than many others, so whether or not it's explicitly mentioned, most people try to follow the spirit of the law rather than try to split hairs. (I mean, technically cocaine is never mentioned either, but it's pretty much implied...) So, there is no official edict from the Mormon church to avoid caffeine, but many Mormons don't drink it to be on the safe side. Anyway, just thought I'd point out where that one comes from. I'm not saying it isn't an unusual practice, but now you know.
I work with a Jehova's Witness, and they do some odd things. I always wondered about Scientology, though.... Is there an entry fee to become an "official member?" Why are they called "Scientologists" when many of their beliefs go AGAINST Science? Can you use a little A-1 or Hot Sauce with that placenta?
im trying to think of this religion. I don't know the name of it. But man, they dress up in some weird figure skating like sequins and stuff. somebody told me what it is, but i forgot. something about venus or something?
