Was about to post my own thread but before pressing submit I checked if you had yours ready. :)

    Here is what I had:

Although not limiting myself to only NBA Bets in the previous 2 days of this thread that countingcrow has started I have ended up winning both days.

Here are some spreads for today:

    Celtics @ Raptors (-2.5)
    Heat @ Pistons (-10.0)
    Grizzlies @ Nets (-7.0)
    Magic @ Hornets (-9.0)
    Jazz @ Rockets (-7.0)
    Lakers @ Spurs (+1.5)
    Wolves @ Suns (-2.0)
    Knicks @ Sonics (-4.0)
    Nuggets @ Warriors (-4.0)
    Cavs @ Clippers (-4.0)

I will give it some thought and post my bets later. At the moment though my initial thinking is that Grizzlies and Raptors look good.

And in tradition I will not limit myself to NBA - already have this bet in:

West Bromwich Albion - Manchester United 2.00
    Espanyol - Osasuna 2.70

from the English League Cup (Carling) and Spanish Primera Division.

I'll bet some play money. Starting out with $5,000. If you do this every day I'll jump in when I have the chance and we'll see how much I lose or win. You could start a contest out of this for fun.

    LA Laker for $3,000
    New Orleans $500
    Toronto $500
    Miami $500
    Seattle $500

I am scratching that Indiana pick.

I'll pass on the Pacers for tonight.

Ok, to summarize, my picks for tonight are as follows:

    Toronto -2
    LA Lakers -1
    NY Knicks +4.5
    Memphis +7

I probably won't be able to post everyday, so maybe Heath or yourself could start some type of contest.

We could just base it on a win/loss record. Point Spreads only. No Money Lines or Over/Unders.

    I personally use SBG Global.

A lot of people use Sportsbook.com.

There are quite a few reputable sportsbooks out there for online gambling.

Here is a link to a list of the top rated Sportsbooks in the industry:

Are those sights legal because they are in Vegas, or Canada, or somewhere else. Or is this just legal in general. This has got to be big business. I did a sample bet on the Lakers for 3,000 and the house pays out 2,700 something. It was pretty easy to do.

I might try it out. But this sounds like a very addicting thing.

It sounds like you essentially give them x-amount of dollars for an account. Which is really sweet for them because they can probably invest it while it sits. Unless of course they are subject to some law forcing them to bank enough money to cover the bets. My guess is then you make bets. And then you can have them redeposit money back into your real account when you are ready to collect. If ever.

Sounds like a good system. I may try it out with the nfl and see how I do.

    My NBA bets as follow:

    #1: 1.5 units
Grizz cover (+7.0) at Nets (1.90)
Raptors cover (-2.5) vs Celtics (1.90)

    #2: 1 unit
Grizz cover (+7.0) at Nets (1.90)
Raptors cover (-2.5) vs Celtics (1.90)
Suns cover (-2.0) vs Wolves (1.90)

    #3: 1 unit
    Grizz win at Nets (3.45)
    Rockets - Jazz over 172 (1.90)

On the issue of starting a contest, I'm all up for it. I guess I could even volunteer to run it. But with my tendency to combine bets and not only use spreads I say why limit it to spreads?

I only bet the overs/unders that way I don't care who wins the game, just that they score the correct number of points I need.

I just thought just doing spreads would make it a lot easier. Your win/loss record will be tarnished if, like in your case, you like to play a lot of parlays. You hardly ever win, but when you do, you usually recoup losses from past failed parlays.

I was thinking we could make each bet $50 for example and then base the contest on the amount of money won/lost no matter the type of bet and just throw the win/loss idea out the window.

    Sound good?

I dont think we have to make it easy. If you just state your bet and how many 'credits' you put on such a bet, that you should be able to make whatever bet you find at the bookie (online) of your choice.

If you do bet on the NBA, NFL or whatever should not matter either I think. I think I would be able to keep seperate 'scores' for each no matter what and the overall score. Thus we do not have to start up seperate betting contests if anyone would like to bet on other things than NBA.

The only limitation I think we should have is that it is a sporting bet and not a longterm one. Making a bet now about who will be NBA champions would hold up your credit for a too long timeperiod.

One more thing. I guess since this would be about fantasy money (for most) that we should start this up in the fantasy forum.

    Does this make any sense?

Sounds good to me. Once you hit zero dollars or zero credits I assume you are out of the game. I like the idea of betting on pretty much anything. It really doesn't matter as long as you state your bet and post it. But I don't mind doing it by sport either. We should probably stick to one book or line to keep it consistent. And set a final date for the last bet. I think we could let anyone into the pool at any time too. Just because it won't matter that much either.

ok this might sound like a stupid question but im a newbie at betting on sports

what does the line/spread mean and how much do you win if the team you bet on wins?

Yeah. We need a couple rules. I don't think we need to start with too much credit. I mean there is always the possibility to just lower your bet with a lower total credit. What you bet in real money is your own business. I say we start with something like 1000 credit. 2500 max IMO.

About how long we run this contest? I'm up for anything? Doing it monthly? Run out the NBA season? Whatever we decide. I guess having a 2 monthly thing could make you join up again after you blow your credit the first week, without to much waiting time. I mean if you blow your credit the first week you deserve to be out for some time. :)

About one book/line etc. I'm not sure I agree with that. Ppl have bookies they prefer to use IRL and it would be easier for them to find their bets there. If someone wants to participate that doesnt usually use an online bookie they could go by what is posted in the thread or find one they can use for the purpose of the game. I know there is a lot of bookies, and you could essentially 'cheat', but whoever wants to lie to win a BBS game - I can't imagine anyone being that low? Also I guess we could have a rule that you post your bet say 10-15 minutes before the official start of the event (bookies usually use 5 minutes) and thus if anyone wants to check the reported odds they have 5-10 extra minutes to check at the listed bookie if they like. (But again - do you really think anyone would be as low as to cheat?)

If we agree upon a set of 'rules' I guess I could start up a thread for this tomorrow in the fantasy forum.

If you see my bet over I have 2 different bets going on Grizzlies.

One for them to cover the spread where they have a 7 point head start compared to Nets. I win this bet if Grizzlies win the game or lose with 6 or less. Should Nets win by 8 or more I lose the bet. If Nets win by 7 the bet is a tie. (Tie = win half) You can also see I posted the odds (1.90) meaning that I would win 1.90 times the bet I put down should the bet be good.

The other bet I have on Grizzlies is for them to outright win the game. It pays better as they are the underdog, but I have less of a chance to win. If Grizzlies win the bet pays 3.45 times the bet I put down.

One other options is to bet on the over/under for a game. Rockets - Jazz has an over/under line of 172 in my bet and I took the over. If the game ends with a total of more than 172 points I win 1.90 times the bet put down. 172 points exactly is a tie.

Hope this clears it up some.

    ok. Sounds good to me.

wakkoman, in real betting (not fantasy) their are lots of different ways to bet. But in a straight up bet the house always takes a percentage of the bet.

    It goes like this.

    Laker -10 vs Rockets

    Final Score
    Lakers 123
    Rockets 101

If I bet $10 on the Lakers I win. Because even giving 10 points to the Rockets the Lakers still win 123 to 111 over the Rockets. The casino will pay me $19.00 when I cash in my ticket. The Casino gets 1$ because they get a processing fee of 10% or whatever they set. I get $19 because I get the $10 I bet and the $9 the casino pays me for the win.

    IF I lose, I get $0

IF I tie, I get back my $9 minus the processing fee.

....But there are many more ways to bet. If you bet the odds like 10-1 it gets a little more complicated as to how much you win. A Parlay is when you bet four different things like betting the Yankees, Red Sox, and Giants to all win. All three must win for you to collect money. Obviously you win more money because the odds are higher that you will lose.

Also, Although I don't understand it completely, in Las Vegas it will look different. You'll see something like this. Maybe Heath can explain it because it confuses me every time.

    #65 Orioles -110
    #66 Red Sox +110
