OK Guys, I could use some input. I changed my website over the summer, and it's now accumulating all the data from every Rockets game. At the moment, this data is being used to generate box scores for games, and for scoring the predictions game in the GARM forum. The thing is, now I've got all this data, I want to do something useful with it. I'm in the process of putting together player pages, with all the usual stats and splits, but I wanted to offer some different information, that was maybe less available. I've got the capacity to produce graphs, pie charts and so on dynamically, so that as game stats come in, the images are automatically updated. Are there any stats or graphs that people would find interesting, or that they can't see anywhere else? ESPN do a lot of stuff like that for baseball, for ERA batting average and so on, would an average PPG or Rebs/PG over time be of any interest? All suggestions gratefully accepted!
Here's a couple of ideas, I don't know how they good they are but: 1)Get the salary stats from that website(its linked in Rockets forum under an overpaid Moochie thread) and calculate some kind of performance vs. salary stats. You'd have to come up with some formula, maybe like espn uses in their Virtual GM game: (PTS + REB + AST + STL + BLK) - ((FGA - FGM) + (FTA - FTM) + TO) and then divide by salary per game. This would tell you game by game who is overpaid. I don't think this info is available anywhere, it's probably close to what agents/teams use to forecast salaries. 2) This is from a gambling perspective, since the game you guys are running has led me to start betting on over/unders on Rockets games. I think it would be cool to somehow see average over/unders for teams. Do you only have Rockets stats or all NBA teams? For instance, if San Antonio has played Houston 4 times through the course of the season, what was the average total score? I would use this average score when considering how many total points would be scored in the 5th game between the Spurs and Rockets. Let me know if you have any questions, I could supply the lines or point you to a source. Good job on the website.
OK, I'm bumping my own thread back up, since I've actually done some dynamic graphs now. I like nycrocket's suggestions, but there's more behind-the scenes work to do on those, so I've just done some straightforward graphs. The page layout is liable to change, but some of the trends on the graphs are quite interesting. Just follow this link to my site, and then click on the player's name. Let me know what you think!
