I am a huge fan of the Houston Rockets but I live in Sacramento and the news last night Chris Webber was saying that if he left Sacramento their would be only be two teams he would be intrested signing with and that was the Rockets and The knicks. So I least we know my fellow Rocket fans that he is considering to sign with Houston.

    Wink,

Did he really say that? If so, things are already looking up. Thanks for the update.

Wink, lemme see your lisence and registration!

I'm curious, what news station? there has to be a trasncript of that interview somewhere.

From what I hear Webber will be able to make around $11 mil per season. It's going to take alot of work to get that far under the cap with the Rox still having Maloney and Maclean counting against the cap. Why did they let go of Maclean anyhow??

    RP,

MacLean will be off the cap next summer. Maloney's salary no one is sure of though, whether there was a buy out or not.

So he registered in June as being in Miami and now claims to live in Sacramento. He's bi-coastal, you know? Are we that jaded? Have we really gotten to the point of doubting our fellow man on every account? Are we really curious what station he heard it on, or does our cynicism run that deep?

From now on, please provide three forms of identification, including a picture ID, and 2 witnesses to verify all claims posted on this board.

BTW-My mother-in-law is White Chocolate's tatoo artist and says that Webber confided in him that he would force a trade this year to the Rockets, so it's obviously a factual account.

I was being serious. Everyone would probably pick Miami, but I'd take Sacramento.

MM, where can one verify that Maclean will be off the cap next summer?

I know Rich and Kenny on Star 610 aren't always right, but yesterday they were talking about the cap situation next season and figured at the moment, with all contracts and owed money being considered, it would be around $9 mil.

Webber wants to win here: He says if he is with a title contender, he wants it to be Kings
    By Martin McNeal
    Bee Staff Writer
    (Published Aug. 2, 2000)

Chris Webber wants a championship, that much is clear. As for wanting to play in New York with his buddy Latrell Sprewell, well, who wouldn't want to play with an old friend?
The situation, however, is a lot more complicated, and, says Webber, was taken out of context in recent publications out of New York.

"I know there was a story written in the New York Daily News," the Kings All-Star forward said Tuesday of an article written two weeks ago that had him ready to leave Sacramento when his contract expires at the end of the 2000-01 season and sign a deal with the Knicks.

"All I know is what I was asked, and then there were a lot of people in New York telling me they hoped I came to play for the Knicks. What I was asked was what I wanted out of my career and what I was looking for when I became a free agent.

"And I said I was looking to win a championship and to be financially secure for myself and family. And since the financial part was going to be pretty much OK, having a chance for the championship was the most important. Then I was asked if I'd liked to play with Spree and, of course, I said I would."

Webber said he's always made it known that he would like to play again with Sprewell, with whom he played at Golden State during Webber's rookie season before the forward was traded to Washington.

"I also said maybe we could get Spree to come and play in Sacramento," Webber said. "Really, it wasn't that serious of a thing.. . . I wasn't trying to make a statement or anything like that. Everybody would like to work with their friends, I think.

"I'm not looking for any problems with anybody in Sacramento. I appreciate the tremendous support I've received and the team has received."

All throughout the non-signing free-agency period last month, hardly an NBA story was written or a radio talk show held without a mention that Webber would become the prime free agent next summer.

According to the press in Detroit, Webber's hometown, the Pistons are readying their salary cap to make a run for him next summer. Ideally, they would have signed fellow Detroit native Jalen Rose this summer and then gone after Webber next summer.

However, free agency is a strange animal, as the Kings found out two weeks ago when free-agent guard Tony Delk gave them the news that he had committed to signing a six-year contract with the Phoenix Suns.

And while Rose is expected to re-sign with the Indiana Pacers, it is Webber who has said he has no desire to play professionally in Detroit.

"It's nothing against the Pistons," he has said before. "There are just too many things going on when you play at home. As much as I like 'The D,' I don't think I'd like playing there. As a matter of fact, I know that."

Webber said one place he does know he enjoys playing is Sacramento.

"I have loved playing in Sacramento with the players we've had," he said. "And I've loved playing in front of the fans we have."

Webber, however, also says he has to be realistic in assessing the team's future. And it is Webber's penchant for speaking his mind that almost ensures there will be other occurrences like the one in New York, until he either re-signs with the Kings or commits to another team next summer.

"It's a fact of reality that our teams as it is now might not make the playoffs," he said of the upcoming season. "And that's no disrespect to our team. Look at how many good teams there are."

Now those comments may raise the eyebrows of some folks in the Kings' front office, but Webber says his ultimate goal is one everyone in Sacramento should share.

"I'm from Detroit and I see what the reaction has been to (free-agent) Grant Hill leaving (for Orlando). But I understand what he means when he says he wants to try to win," he said. "The place I want to win a championship is in Sacramento."

To me, the rumors are not anything to build on right now. Besides, Webber won't be a free agent till next season. No reason to speculate on something that is such a long shot and rather far away. I know it might seem a bit harsh to say this, but these Webber rumors are even less than your usual "rumor." It's not really based on much, and the talks have been mentioning NY and Detroit.

I haven't even heard anything on Houston. I sure hope this is true, for Webber is going to be the prized free agent in 2001.

I thought it was very interesting what he said about playing in your home town. distractions and all. In some ways it makes sense, but I'm not sure what to think of that. Anybody got some examples of hometown players and how they've done respectively?
