    Webber speaks...
    By Martin McNeal
    Bee Staff Writer
    (Published July 3, 2001)

Two days into free agency, forward Chris Webber said he has no idea where he will play next season.
In a wide-ranging interview with The Bee on Monday night, Webber admitted he has been overwhelmed by the process.

"I don't want to talk about everything right now," he said after apologizing profusely for failing to return phone calls, "but I'll just say this: I didn't realize how serious all this (free agency) was until 12:01 (July 1). That's all I want to say about it.

"Right now, I'm in the same position that I've been in. I don't know what I'm going to do. I know that I want to get away, maybe go to Jamaica, relax and think about it. Pray on my decision. Everybody has got an opinion. My family, friends, people in the airport, everybody.

"I just had to throw my brother (Jeff) out of here. I mean, he went to get some food, but I had to get him out of here."

Webber said he has been contacted by about "12 to 15 teams," including the Kings. He has not called back every team but plans to do so during the next few days.

"I want to be respectful to every team. I haven't called back the Kings, but it's not out of disrespect. I just want to take my time."

Kings president Geoff Petrie said Monday that the team has extended an overture to Webber.

"We made very early contact with both of them (Webber and free-agent guard Doug Christie)," Petrie said. "With respect to Chris, we're working on his timetable. We're comfortable with him setting the direction of where he wants to go with this. We'll continue to be available."

Webber said he is still working with his personal team, which includes his aunt, Charlene Johnson, an attorney who has worked with him since he turned pro in 1992, brother Jeff and marketing representative Shawn Bryant from GameFace Ventures.

Webber indicated that he might hire an agent.

"I'll probably be making an announcement about hiring an agent in the next couple of days," he said. "And then again, it's possible I won't be hiring an agent."

Webber said he had been working out in Sacramento until a few days before the draft.

"Usually, I'll work out right after the season every year. I like to work out until the playoffs are over. I don't know if it's because I want to have that feeling that I'm working as long as everybody else. Maybe that's just something mental. But I like to do it, so I can feel all right about taking some time off after the playoffs.

"But I do want to make a decision as soon as I can because I want to play some basketball. I haven't been playing, just shooting and running."

Webber said he looks at signing a new contract as not the end, but the beginning.

"I don't want to look at this as the end of anything," he said. "I want to come back better next season than I was last season."

Webber, despite a disappointing performance in the playoffs, was the first Kings player since guard Nate Archibald during the 1975-76 season to be named to the All-NBA's first team this past season. After averaging 27.1 points and 11.1 rebounds, Webber finished fourth in voting for the NBA's Most Valuable Player award after he led the Kings to a franchise-best-tying 55 victories.

Webber said he went to Detroit and then New York to work on a few business affairs before returning to Detroit and watching the NBA draft. He said he was excited about the Kings drafting Gerald Wallace.

"He's athletic, and you know I like that. Plus, Mr. Petrie, I mean, his record speaks for itself at this point."

Webber said before he watched the draft in Detroit, he spoke with former teammate and close friend Jason Williams.

"That was lovely," he said. "I was just relaxing. I didn't know what day it was or what time it was. Then Jason called me and told me he'd been traded. I didn't believe him and told him he was kidding.

"Then he told me he was serious, and it was stunning."

Webber said he just talked with Williams and tried to encourage him.

"I've been traded, and I've been through a lot in my career," Webber said.

"And I know that sometimes you feel like you fall through a hole, but that way down there, there can be a springboard at the bottom that propels you even higher.

"I mean, I owe a lot to Jason. I don't think I have the three years I had without Jason. He's the best ballhandler I've ever seen and the quickest player I've ever seen in my life.

"Any team that had Jason and loses him, will be missing. I'm going to miss Jason, but he's my dog for life."

Webber said he received a call from Mike Bibby, for whom Williams was traded to the Vancouver/Memphis Grizzlies.

"I called him back and said I'd heard about the trade. I told him I was disappointed that Jason had been traded, but I thought that he'd definitely help the team."

Webber said many things will go into his decision.

"I don't think people know how many things I'll consider as I try to make the decision. I remember when I met (Detroit president) Joe Dumars in '86. He was buying a Chevy truck. About a week later I met (coach) Isiah (Thomas) when my brother and I got some free tickets to a Pistons game and we went to a clinic before the game.

"I mean, that's the dilemma. I have a lot of respect for a lot of people in this game. How could I not want to play for a guy like Joe or for a coach like Isiah? Hey, I cried when he threw that pass away against Boston (in the 1986 Eastern Conference Finals)."

As you guys can read from the Sac Bee article published today, Webber has not said he has no interest in Houston.

Webber won't do anything to lose leverage. I expect he will let Houston know by the 12th.

The ESPN message board isn't exactly the most reliable place. Besides the Rockets lost a lot of interest in him after getting Eddie Griffin. In fact the Rockets said almost immediately after the draft that they wanted Mo back. Mo and Griffin's rebounding (And Mo's rebounding isn't THAT bad), will allow us to operate without a center. These guys could combine to get us 13 to 14 rebounds per game, and a serviceable rebounder would pick up the slack.

Actually I think Webber expressing any disinterest in Houston is because Houston has expressed less than no interest in Webber, it's an ego thing.

I don't think Houston has any interest in Webber either - why is that a lie? Why would we want Webber?

I heard that on the radio today, and fwiw, I say "Good Riddance". We've had problems with these fickle, double-talking FA in the past. Besides, I think he should stay in Sacramento, even though we'll probably meet them in the playoffs (when we're the 1st seed, and they're the 8th, [IMG]).
