    Mavericks eye Webber

MILWAUKEE -- Earlier this season, Sacramento Kings forward Chris Webber told one local reporter that he likes what the Mavericks are doing.
Well, guess what? The Mavericks like what Webber is doing, too, and would like to get their hands on him when he becomes a free agent July 1.
"We'd love to have C-Webb in a heartbeat," Mavericks acting head coach Donnie Nelson said. "[Mavericks coach/general manager Don Nelson] would love to coach Webb.
"Obviously our hands are going to be a little bit tied as far as the [salary] cap situation goes, unless we have some major things happen."
Don Nelson had a contentious relationship at times with Webber when the two were with the Golden State Warriors. But Donnie Nelson believes that was overblown.
If so, the Mavericks could be a major player this summer in the Chris Webber sweepstakes. But only, owner Mark Cuban said, if they don't have to upset the team's core group.
The Mavericks are convinced that guard Michael Finley will opt out of his contract this summer. But they're also convinced that Finley will re-sign with the Mavericks.
"We're certainly hopeful that Mike comes around and re-signs," said Donnie Nelson, who also is the director of player personnel for the Mavericks. "But you never know."
Forwards Gary Trent and Mark Bryant, and centers Shawn Bradley and Christian Laettner will also be free agents this summer.
"Shawn Bradley is another guy who's playing fabulous," Donnie Nelson said. "We'd love to have him finish his career with the Mavericks.
"We don't know which way those winds are going to blow. But certainly we'll be able to find a spot on the team for C-Webb."

Oh, I hope not. They would be WAY better than us if they got C-Webb and we didn't.
