As Webb points out and others have talked about, a huge part of the problem is prohibition. It is really nice to see the chinks in the War on Drugs armor being exposed. Maybe in a few years there will be the political will to do something about it.
Very good to hear about this. Now is a good time to dig into the issue, have realistic, factual debates and pull the trigger on reform in Obama's 2nd term if he is re-elected.
That's why Webb is perfect to take this on. He's pretty innoculated from accusations that he's a dirty f'n hippie.
Are you guys trying to screw up the US economic system? Well if you have an uneducated poor person subsisting on a couple of hundred bucks a month there is no great multiplier for the economy. If you can arrest him and throw away the key for a second or third possession of a $5-10 rock you can then spend $50,000 and up per year incarcerating him and he contributes to the economy. Also you can have him assemble computers or do other slave labor for the prison industrial complex and he contributes even more. Make the prison private and a contributor to the Perry campaign and it is even sweeter. If the poor smuck is out free and has a major health problem he suffers in silence at his home, while in prison he gets health care and further contributes to the economy.
Yeah, but he is a Democrat so he is a dirty f'n communist or socialist. Don't you remember the McCain-Palin campiagn?
You are certainly becoming a bitter old man. Maybe you should calm down a bit. Blood pressure, you know.
Yeah, I was. I can understand that with the death of the whole Reagan-Bush thing, Refman would not be in the mood for humor.
Many see the underlying problem with our prison systems being that simple mar1juana usage or possession is locking too many people up. Oh, let's legalize it, that'll fix the problem. Oh, let's not lock people up for it, but keep it illegal. Oh, the war on drugs is a failure, so let's admit defeat, decriminalize it, or not penalize it... I see it as border security being a failure. All the C.H.I.C.K.E.N. club and DARE programs you can imagine have not done enough. If there was reasonable security on the border, I doubt this issue would be nearly as large. But noooooooo.............
For meth labs, just look at Montgomery County, Texas. They are everywhere. There was concern a while back that all of the chemicals confiscated at these places could cause an explosion in the evidence room.
