I knew it they are closing Sharpstown Mall. (Filed Bankruptcy) Once they announced they were closing Macy I said to my wife damn if that closes, Sharpstown is going to close. Well my friends get ready for the ghetto to reach First Colony Mall and Galleria..

So did First Colony Mall and the new and improved Meyerland Plaza kill both Westwood Mall and Sharpstown Mall? Comparing the two, when you consider that First Colony is about 4 times further away, I imagine most will go to the Galleria. And last time I checked, pretty much anyone and everybody goes there now.

A few years ago I read in the Chronicle that Sharpstown was the highest volume mall in the metro area. The only thing that stays the same is change.

When I used to live in Houston, late 90's, I saw a shooting in person at Sharpstown. BTW, my uncle used to work at Gillman's Honda across the street from the mall. Is Gillman's still there or did "he" go out of business?

They raised that location and built a new dealership out @ 59 and Beltway 8.

    Oh! Thanks.

Speaking of ghetto, I also remember that I was supposed to enroll at Lee High School, but I heard that it was a ghetto school. So I cheated and ended up going to Elsik High. Funny thing is that I thought Elsik was supposed to be a good school.

Does anyone else remember the old Meyerland plaza? I grew up going into that place. One of the oddest malls I've ever been into. It was like a small mall, but the inside was open to the climate. They used to decorate it nicely for Christmas on the inside, though. I still recall the giant snowman.

Sounds like you grew up near where I did. There really wasn't much to it, alot of empty stores from my memory. JC Penny, Foley's, Woolworths, but not much else. Used to go to that Woolworths alot before it closed down. There was the first barber shop I used to go to there, and an arcade where I spent alot of quarters playing SF2, among other games. The movie theater was small and almost completely deserted every time I was there. I actually really liked the outdoor idea, it had grass and trees but there was plenty of shade / shelter from the elements in the interior areas when the weather was bad.

Sharpstown Mall has been a staple for shopping in Houston for years and now its owners have filed for bankruptcy. With Video

Nearly all the malls that have fallen on hard times once catered to upper middle class suburban shoppers and neighborhoods. Those neighborhoods changed and so did the malls. Now so are some of the owners. Sharpstown is the latest example of the changes underway in the area's retail landscape.
If you look you can see the signs that Sharpstown Mall has seen better days. Finger's Furniture is leaving its longtime mall location and Macy's is moving out this year as well.
These days there are a lot of kiosks, clothing stores and jewelry outlets catering to a younger urban clientele One of them is owned by Dean Kokhar who's now worried. "We have a business, if they close the mall, what can we do," he asked.
Sharpstown's future would be up to the buyer, but a lot of older malls around Houston have gone through a transformation. When you look at other malls around the area some are thriving, some have been sold, some torn down and redeveloped like Town and Country Mall. The latter is now a collection of ground level retail.
Gulfgate Mall, Houston's first air conditioned mall, now is a thriving shopping area. Its developer was Ed Wulfe.
"The thing about Sharpstown is it fulfills the requirement of real estate and that's location," Wulfe told us.
Wulfe is heavily in high end mixed use development. He has a model of what will be the new Boulevard Place on Post Oak in his office. He's also behind the concept of power centers, the new term for community shopping areas.
"There's still a huge population base that can be served," Wulfe said. "Sharpstown as it is now doesn't work, it needs to be reinvented."
"I do hope they do something that's good for the neighborhood," wished Patty Pizzitola who is a mall customer.
Sharpstown takes up just under 40 acres of land beside the Southwest Freeway. The owners reportedly claim it's valued at $70 million.
Join other Houstonians in remembering the places that have closed over the years across town.

I've only lived in Houston for 21 years, but I always wondered why Meyerland Plaza wasn't better developed because, IMO, the surrounding neighborhoods would have supported a nice mall. I thought they were way late developing the place.

Regarding Sharpstown Center, there is so much retail activity on the 59 feeder between Hillcroft and Bellaire in both directions that I'm sure something successful will replace it. I wonder if the revenues of the nearby restaurants and other retails stores has dropped much over the years.
