my guess is thats just what they call african americans all the time and don't think much of it.

 

When you call someone something derogatory and not think much of it, that's an even more insidious form of racism than using the term to be derisive. That means it's become ingrained in your way of thinking. It was exactly like that when I grew up in East Texas in the 50's and 60's.

But there is no one in the US in 2008 that doesn't know n***** is an overtly racist term.
