Our average PF's is 24.77 which ranks us - if I counted right at nba.com 15th or right in the middle. Our opponents so far - when I do a simple add up their averages (memphis x2) and divide by 9 - is 24.79 or right in the middle. Yet when they have played us the officials have only called them for 20.88 per game. The Hawks' 14 last night was way below their average of 23.85. So the new league strategy seems to be hack-a Yao - it probably won't be called. Our opponents have shot 71 more FT's than us or an average of 8 more per game for 6.2 more pts per game. For those thinking this is a 3PT driven phenomena - we have only 20 more 3pt attempts than our opponents. We are dead last in the number of PF's called against our opponents at 20.88 per game. Did we forget to slip an envelope to someone during the pre-season? Anyone have the league phone number or email?
You need an aggressive offense to get calls. Aside from Yao and McGrady, who do you think can go hard to the rim? We've got a bunch of b-class jumpshooters surrounding our two stars. They're not going to get us calls. We have what? 4 fast breaks a night? Is that where we'll draw fouls? Evan
I'm sorry, but until Yao quits letting rebounds get picked out of his grip by 6'4" guards, he's not going to get any respect from the officials either. He's got to OWN that paint... and I don't mean a monster slam once out of every twelve times he's under the bucket. I mean act like he BELONGS... May never happen with his demeanor...

One thing that sticks out - Pau Gasol who has been called a whiner before on this board - outshines everyone in getting the calls. Yao does have some work to do to get into the same league as TD and upward and perhaps improve his calls and points scored.
The same thing happened last season. We aren't driving in enough to get calls. It is almost impossible to get calls when you shoot jumpers all night long. If I'm not correct, I believe TMac led the league in FTA last season. We need to drive in a create contact. It is almost impossible to stop TMac from drving in w/o fouling. I'm tired of blaming the refs, they make 1-2 bad calls a game. Shooting 11FTs against the Hawks is soley based on the fact that we never drove to the basket and weren't aggressive.
The more whiner you are, the more FT attempts you will get. That's just the life in the NBA. Barking dogs get the food. If you are quiet, you get nothing.
True, but also players do not whine enough. Yao is not a big whiner. He needs to take a class on how to whine effectively. Actually, during the pre-season, Rox should hire a psychologist expert in teaching a classed called: "Effective communication with Referees"
Out of the first 9 games, can anyone guess how many times we've out-freethrowed the opponent? That's right - zero. Never, not once. If wins were determined by free throws attempted, we'd be 0-9. You'd think by default we'd out-freethrow the opponent just ONCE by having two superstars. Did Kobe/Shaq's team ever get out-freethrowed? I doubt it...yea, Yao/McGrady aren't in the same league as Kobe/Shaq, so how about comparing more similar tandems? Not many of our players flop/whine like other teams do. We got very few calls last year too. I'd actually prefer to see our players not whining, but unfortunately, that doesn't work in today's game. I'm not concerned with McGrady, he'll get his. But the refs HAVE to do a better job officiating Yao. I don't think they necessarily single him out, b/c it's very hard officiating someone who's 7'6. It's probably way too early to read too much into the FT discrepancies, but I look forward to the 1st game when we shoot more FTs than the other team.
Exactly. We didn't go to the line that much last season and we aren't this season either. How do we expect to get to the line when all we settle for his jumpers? Everytime TMac drives in, he either scores or gets fouled, we need him to drive in on a lot of plays. Running the same offense everytime down the court is redundant, and teams figure out how to stop it. Sometimes, JVG just needs to let TMac/Yao run a two man game. They are good enough players to know how to use each other. They don't need someone telling them what to do all the time.
Take our 2 first options in scoring, Yao and Tmac. Both of them shy away from physical contact. Yao puts moves on people, and has only lately started to take it to the rim strong. Tmac takes a lot of jump shots, and doesn't drive to the rim near as much as Kobe. I feel the Hawks game was called fairly well. Yao was something like 13-15, and didn't go to the line much-he wasn't hacked, he just shot over everyone, and showed them up. Outside of that game, however, I can see your point. Yao gets hacked like mad in some games, and the calls just aren't there for him. I'm actually more concerned about Tmac taking so many jump shots. Maybe he's leary of injuring himself "at this particular time"......???
