I cannot believe that little kids today need to have these classic characters (minus Lola) turned into hyper stylized super heroes. There's absolutely no connection to the originals except similar names (Buzz Bunney) and species. Why didn't they just create some new characters? Link Every now and then, I catch that Duck Dodgers show on Cartoon Network. It's pretty good and it reminds me of cartoons from the early 90s like Animaniacs, which was laced with jokes that adults could enjoy if they were the kind of parents who watched tv with their kids (Like MadMax). When I have kids, I'll be damned if I let them watch imported kids shows from Japan. They'll be watching Looney Tunes and Animaniacs on Blue Ray DVDs.
exactly I'm waiting on the updated Smurfs when they put the bumrush on Gargamel's candy *ss Rocket River
The funny thing is, while the image may be more menacing, I bet what they do in the new series doesn't hold a candle to the original looney toons. Those were some violent, dark cartoons.
A couple of years ago Cartoon network played all of the Looney Tunes pretty much back to back. I taped it so I would have them. The WWII collection of them is amazing, the one where Daffy mocks the live action footage of Hitler giving a speech is genius. It's one of the several that I don't think they show anymore.
I just did a google search on "buzz bunny" here at work. I'm sure the tech guys here at work are going to enjoy that one.
Here's a nice comparison pic. I really wish I could have seen that Looney Tunes marathon. There are supposed to be websites where you can find pics or clips of the WWII stuff. The most un PC would obviously be about the Japanese. Of course that was a different time and the country had just gone through Pearl harbor.
If you haven't seen it, I recommend you try to get a copy of the 2000 documentary "Chuck Jones: Extremes and In-Betweens, a Life in Animation" It really shows his roll as director of the cartoons and some character creation. The DVD has the full versions of "Duck Dodgers in the 24 1/2th Century" and "Feed the Kitty" in the extras. http://www.pbs.org/wnet/gperf/shows/chuckjones.html or http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0255896/
i went to this screening last year at the academy building (the oscar folks) where they played a bunch of cartoons that originally aired during the wwII years and never were aired again since then because of their propangandistic nature. anyways it was amazing what was allowed to be on tv back then. there was a cartoon where bugs was mocking a japanese soldier and it was terribly offensive to anyone that was japanese, also all the german stuff. it was also pretty weird seeing a cartoon where pluto is helping out to make bombs by saving his old grease (to help produce glycerine). I dont think the studio would ever release these cartoons for public release due to their nature, but the old looney tunes were amazing to say the least. this new show probably wont even hold a light to animaniacs or tiny toons which wasnt too long ago. its a shame that there is no real good cartoon for kids to watch these days, everything seems to be from japan or have that anime feel to it. even the new renditions of the wb characters have that anime look to it. thank god for the boom cartoon channel they still show a lot of old hanna barbara cartoons, original looney tunes and once in a while smurfs as well (never realized as a kid one of the smurfs was gay)
There's a Disney DVD set out (On The Frontlines I believe) that contains lots of their wartime material including the Pluto grease one. The best one on the set by far is Der Fuehrer's Face, featuring Donald in "Nutzi land".
