quote from Chron: nbadraft net has us picking wayne ellington at 25. and he's 6'5, nbadraft describes him as so he's not really undersized for a guard,(I dont like undersized guards), and solves the needs for a back-up to T-Mac. I think its just that his defense is a bit lacking. opinions?
Is he really 6'5"? He's one of those guys if I were standing right next to him i'd have a very tough time believing he's anything taller than 6'3-6'-4".
as a UNC fan... I wouldn't like the idea of Ellington joining the Rockets. he takes plays off, and depends on dunking way to much. His mid-range game is decent, but not great. I want to see us get 2 players in this draft with very good mid-range shooting.
bagagaggagaga! know what i just realized...kid says he's not really undersized, then uses nbadraft.net as his source for his positives...first thing listed under his negatives is "Undersized at the 2-guard position"
OMG! wow! you made a neverbeforeseen realization! for this majestic discovery you get a gold star! now you have three gold stars instead of two!
Ellington is not ready for the NBA. He's too frail, did not excel in college, and is only coming out because his "potential" is still untapped. He's only 6"4 which these days is not enough for an NBA SG prospect without another killer weapon like a deadly 3pt shot or lightning fast speed or hops like the Franchise in college. Ellington is like a crappy version of Rashad McCants, much crappier, in every aspect, every single aspect, I don't need to break each aspect down do I?
Watched every UNC game (and attended a few) this season. Ellington definitely HAS a killer 3 pointer and probably is the best pure shooter in college basketball right now. Doesn't really depend on dunking that much (I don't know where you got that from - in fact, he often goes too soft with lay ups at times). Good mid range game. He doesn't fade on his mid range a la Kobe but is one of the best pull up shooters in college basketball. He needs to work on defense and his ball handling. And yes, hes 6'4 and a little undersized but his shot and athleticism makes up for it (a little).
Ellington is much too undersized for the NBA. We need a tall, athletic SG who can get his own shot and who is equally comfortable shooting treys or driving to the basket (and finishing). Besides, we already have a tall player with a killer 3-point shot.
I think your bias is coming into play here. Ellington is no where near the level McCants was at when he came out. I watched every game then and attended a few )).. Rashad could take a game over, and do it by himself. His shot was unbelievable.. I just don't see that in Wayne yet. He needs to go back to the school and sharpen his skills, but more so sharpen his killer mentality.
Another thing I noticed about Ellington was that he tended not to do as well in the big games. Their first game against Duke he was a chokester in every sense, going 3-14 with 8 points. Then in the second game he did better, 8-14 with 16 points but Danny Green was the main guy who pushed them over the top in the end. Finally in the NCAA tournament, his last three games proceeded as such: Wash. St: 4-13 13 points Louisville: 5-14 13 points Kansas: 8-21 18 points All this from someone who took 7 free throws total in those three aforementioned games and dished out 0 assists at the same time. He's a severely one-dimensional player, his rebounding won't translate to the NBA, he doesn't get to the line at a prodigious rate because he's more gunshy than T-Mac about penetrating, and finally even his SHOOTING which is supposed to be an asset is coming out at under 1 point per shot (PPS) in the important games. I'm sorry but this guy is not ready for the NBA and I certainly don't want him on the Rockets.
He'll probably go back to school after his rather unimpressive showing at the draft camp. If he declare for the draft, he'll just be a second round pick. Probably a mid-to late 2nd rounder too. Hope this guy won't end up on Rocket's roster. Gerald Green is probably better as backup SG after we trade away Luther.
I didn't say that Ellington was any better or more ready than McCants was. I'm just saying you guys are underestimating his game. I agree he crapped out in a few big games but he also had monster games too (Clemon anyone?). He's definitely inconsistent and agree that he would benefit greatly to stay a year (hes sure as hell better than J J Redick at least)
As for the rockets, we definitely need more depth at the swing I like Chris Douglas Roberts (if hes available) Brandon Rush (if hes available) or an athletic low post defender (like Robin Lopez).
None of those Carolina guys really impressed me. In fact, the only one that really did (Hansbrough) is likely to make an average-at-best pro. Soooo yeah, let somebody else get the next Luther Head.
