Well there's a tornado warning in effect for Galveston and yes, apparently there was a waterspout :

    -------------------------

Statement as of 10:01 PM CDT on August 30, 2009

    Galveston County...

At 949 PM CDT... webcams and trained weather spotters confirmed the
waterspout moved onshore between 37th and 25 streets on Galveston
Island. Radar is not clearly picking up the rotation... but movement
is likely north to northwest at 10 mph. Residents between the
seawall and Pelican Island should take cover now.

    * Locations in the the Tornado Warning include but are not limited to
schlitterbahn... Pelican Island... Moody Gardens... Galveston State
    Park and Jamaica Beach

Please report severe weather to the County sheriff... local police...
or department of public safety and ask them to relay your report to

I've seen several off Galveston and in the bay over the years. I remember racing away in a power boat on one occasion, when one headed straight for us. Kind of exciting, really.

When I lived in Baytown I got to watch one cross the bay, it was pretty cool.

No, not at all. We weren't the only boat haulin' ass away from the damn thing. They aren't as bad as a tornado, usually, but you wouldn't want to be caught by one. When one shows up on the bay, every boat in sight takes off, like someone kicked an ant hill. I've seen at least three on the bay and 2 or 3 at San Luis Pass. We took refuge under a bridge once, and that one got pretty close. I used to go fishing and sailing on Galveston Bay all the time when I lived in Houston. Often went to San Luis to fish and mess around on beach. It used to be a nice place to camp and go fishing at dawn. We used to gig flounder at night, too. That's a real trip!
