Wow, those are pretty crazy. Thanks. I also found a number of videos at arcade renaissance for SF2. Geared towards the old school super nintendo version:

I'll add a couple sports games: All-Pro Football 2K8 and Prize Fighter. They should have made APF2K8 much more customizable. With no NFL license, you need as much customization as possible. With Prize Fighter, 2K had a chance to capitalize on the boxing genre. They failed. The potential was there. Their documentary style career mode was something different but their gameplay was extremely lacking.

It was more personal preference than the games were bad in my case -- FF is just not my thing, but I was still disappointed because everyone was raving about them.

Brute Force. The squad based tactical approach was a waste.

you really just have to play against people or play against the computer to find out the niches of SF2 Remix,
they really did balance out the characters, so some characters before like T-Hawk are much much better.

Alot of stuff you just have to play people and watch on spectator mode to see their strategies.

i'm on player match all the time cause its fun, i never do ranked match.

add me to your list :

Another one I'd like to add is Heavenly Sword. Great graphics, great cinematics, decent/good combat system, large-scale battles, etc. But the game was only like 5-6 hours long IIRC. It also had some performance issues, but I don't think they were a big deal. I think the original GoW flirted with being too short (why I never purchased it), but it was at least a few hours longer IIRC. I think reviews complained about a lack of an online mode, which is pretty ridiculous IMO given the type of game, but the truth is that the game definitly needed some more content, especially since there weren't many puzzles or any platforming.

It apparently did end up selling ~1M copies, but I guess that wasn't enough to greenlight a sequel. Prior to its release, Ninja Theory had plans for at least 3 games. I suppose it is still possible to see Nariko return in the future (although likely not by Ninja Theory), but she definitely didn't meet her Goddess of War expectations.
Hmm...I'm not quite sure they missed expectations too much with sales. LBP did sell over 1.3M copies IIRC, although I would probably agree that it should have sold much, much more (especially in the US...and even Japan I think). Don't know about Dead Space, but the 360 version sold about 200K in October, nearly on par with LBP's numbers. Combining the 360, PS3, and PC versions (and European sales), I could definitely see it surpassing 500K or so, especially with the good word of mouth it received. I don't think 500K-1M is too bad for a horror game like Dead Space, although who knows what EA's expectations. Although as with LBP, it is probably a shame that it didn't end up selling millions of copies either.

AFAIK, both studios are working on sequels still.

FF 10 was pretty amazing in terms of graphics and cinematics.

BUT I thought it had a really weak storyline, horrible dialogue and voice acting and an oddball leveling up system.

You pretty much start with everyone already in your party and the plot progresses as one of your party members slowly reveals information to you.

The move to voice acting axed a lot of the previous word counts in previous FF games bc of how much slower people talk than they read and it just felt writers did an awful job keeping the dialogue strong in its brevity.

    Great choice!

I thought I was the only person in the world who played and finished that crap! It was hailed as the next Halo. hahahaha

Others that come to mind; Fable, Kotor II, and Too Human(Didn't play it, but the reviews are horrible for such a favorite game developer, Silicon Knights).

That was the problem, it played like Halo but it was supposed to be something different with the squad based approach.

KOTOR II I didn't mind, it was just nothing new.

Wow, time's really passed me by. I used to keep my ear close to the video games streets but this is the first time I've never heard of the games mentioned

Dont want to blame struggling economy on EVERYTHING. But on newer games maybe some people who dont have the extra video game budget for the impulse purchase like they used to might automatically develop the overly critical eye along with it, wondering if they're getting their "money's worth".

Knights of the Old Republic from years ago CERTAINLY wasnt the thread theme of wasted potential. Though it got me finding out I'm just not an RPG type player and made me feel more exhausted rather than excited after playing a game.

Yoshi's Story for N64. The follow-up to one of the all-time classic sidescrollers was a clunky children's game.

Never played it, but it seems like people were interested but it was really bad. Same for Superman 64.

    Couple more (all JRPGs)...

Shadow Hearts. First game was decent. Second game was great (IMO). Didn't get a chance to play the third game, but apparently it was a slight disappointment (compared to the 2nd game). I think poor sales for all 3 games lead to the studio being shut down. I think most of the staff went to Mistwalker or are helping them.

Parasite Eve 2. Loved Parasite Eve 1. Played a little bit of PE2, but didn't really like it as much (reviews seemed to agree). Seemed like this would kill the franchise, but SE is giving it another shot...although IIRC, it sure seemed like they were going to repeat the mistakes of PE2 (making it more of a shooter than a RPG).

Possibly the Chrono series. Neither game were disappointments, at least for me. Both seemed to sell well too, although I don't know what SE's expectations for CC were (sold 1.5M before going Greatest Hits). Never did get Chrono Break or any other sequels though. Not sure why...possibly too tough to keep the staff together or something. I think there is some wasted potential as far as the franchise/IP goes...

    edit:
Spider-man 3 was probably pretty disappointing too. Really enjoyed Spider-man 2 (seemed to nail the web-slinging mechanic, among other things). Never actually played SM3, but things sounded pretty bad.

I mentioned the SECOND ONE, KOTOR II, the sequel, which was a disappointment.

The original KOTOR is a classic.

Hey Tinman, I'm curious what your favorite fighting games are. Also favorite SF titles by order.

    Mines top one is MVSC2

Since you seem like an old school guy I assume you don't really like MVSC2.

I didn't really play it. I know its a popular game. I think I played the first one, that's the tag team one right?

I liked that Xmen fighting game from capcom.

    I like SSF2 Turbo / Remix
    SF2 Hyper Fighting
    Champion Edition
    SF Alpha 2

    GTA IV

I thought it would change my life, but I never called in sick to work once.

Soo... you agree and disagree with me in the same breath?

    I'm confused.

Bottom line: LBP & DS both undershot the amount of copies they could have sold with proper marketing and to a lesser extent, timing.
