The New York Knicks signed restricted free agent guard/forward Jared Jeffries to an offer sheet this afternoon, according to NBA sources.

The Washington Wizards will have seven days to decide whether to match the offer. Team owner Abe Pollin, president of basketball operations Ernie Grunfeld and coach Eddie Jordan have all indicated a desire to retain Jeffries.

Terms of the offer sheet were not available. Jeffries has long been coveted by Isiah Thomas, New York president of basketball operations and head coach. Like Jeffries, Thomas starred at Indiana University.

The Wizards have 13 players under contract after the recent signing of free agent forward Darius Songaila to a five-year, $21 million contract, and have room under the NBA's luxury tax threshold to match the offer to Jeffries, according to sources.

Pollin has indicated that he is willing to spend up to, but not over, the luxury tax threshold $65.4 million. Teams with payrolls over the threshold pay a dollar-for-dollar penalty to the league on the amount of payroll that exceeds $65.4 million.

The most likely scenario, according to sources, is that the Wizards will use the full seven days before matching the offer sheet to retain Jeffries.

Jeffries was drafted by the Wizards with the 11th overall pick in 2002 and has posted averages of 6.1 points and 4.8 rebounds in four seasons while carving out a role as perhaps the team's best all-around defender.

Best possible news for Washington. Jared gets MLE money, they get to match, everyone happy save for NY.

I know this is realy an ignorant question but I'll fess up'. I am really kinda new to this.

Is it possible for another team (say the Rockets) to in turn sign Jeffries to an offer sheet if it is for an amount greater than what the Knicks are offering ?

I know in this case the Rockets dont even have their full MLE to offer so this probably couldnt happen anyway. (But we don't know that Knicks necessarily offered full MLE either yet.)

I just want to understand if this sort of thing is possible, for a player to sign multiple, competing offer sheets. Sort of soliciting the highest bid and then giving the Wizards opportunity to match highest offer.

Free agents, UFAs or RFAs, get to sign one contract and it's done. For RFAs, if they sign with another team it's just a matter of whether their current team decides to match and keep the player. With his signature, Jeffries is now off the market. Most of the time, the current team will wait the full 7 days before announcing their decision.

Isiah must ADD, everything looks like a good move for enough time to try and invest some dollars.

Every team over the cap gets the MLE (only teams that are under the cap by a specific amount lose their Mid Level), no matter how far over they are.

For us to not be the team making an attempt for JJ, someone in our front office better be formulating a heist on the level of Ocean's Eleven to get something legitamate at PF. Mo Taylor, C. Weatherspoon, Juwan Howard; do they have a problem getting someone who is tall enough to put a hand in Duncan or Dirk's face. We're letting one slip thru our fingers.

Uh, JJ a 4? He's a 3 with some ability to play multiple positions and score from none. He is not the answer to Rox 4 dilemna.

I like Jeffries a lot as a combo forward and think he could defend the four just fine, but we already have a guy very similar to him with a much better shot and overall offensive game in Battier. We need backcourt help more at this point and, if find a way to package Howard and get that backcourt help, then we would need to use the remaining TE to get a combo post player who can defend.

Regardless, Jeffries is probably not worth the full MLE (which we don't have anyway) and if he was, then he would not settle for the 4.2 TE we could use to get him.

JJ is tall and skilled, but for the purpose of handling Duncan, he's not any better than Battier. In fact, Battier probably has a little more raw strength and a better base for handling the stronger guys. JJ is rather skinny and weak.

Knicks is going to pay $30 million plus luxury tax. Another bloated contract if Wizards doesn't match. Is Isaiah try to save his job at whatever cost? As a coach he knows that he has to produce result next season or else may be gone.

Ny Daily News said that the knicks will probably try and trade either q-rich or jalen rose because they have a glut at SF. If that's true, I wouldn't mind going after rose. He could be the tall starting SG we need and back up tmac. He can shoot and pass, and he's in the last year of his contract. I know he has a bad rep but i think he could be of value on the rockets.

    wishful thinking i guess
