In the event that we never see him perform again, I ask the question, was Warren the greatest QB to ever play the game? What are your thoughts? ------------------ humble, but hungry.
I don't think you're that great if you don't have at least one Super Bowl appearance. but then again, I'm not a real big football fan... rH ------------------ The Psychedelic Groove House of Rockets Basketball Love! He won 5 consecutive Grey Cups in Canada I think he could have been had he been given the opportunity to play in the NFL in his younger days rather than his ladder years. He had great touch and strength but based on his performaces as they are he is one of the Greatest but not THE GREATEST Rocket River ------------------
I think he's just outside of the top ten in NFL history. ------------------ "We don't have any plans. We just plan to win." Mack Brown
Moon was 27 when he started playing for the Oilers in 1984, hardly an old man (younger than Chris Weinke). There are a number of QB's I would rank ahead of Moon, including (but not limited to) Montana, Starr, Young, Elway, Unitas, Staubach, Marino, Favre, Aikman, Kelly and Fouts. Moon may be the best QB to NEVER make it to a conference championship game, but that, in itself, is a backhanded compliment. He had a lot of nice stats and threw the prettiest pass in the NFL, but couldn't win even the Super Bowl quarterfinal game. ------------------
Here are my top 10 greatest qb's of all time: 1.Elway 2.Marino 3.Montana 4.Young 5.Aikman 6.Bradshaw 7.Namath 8.Stabler 9.Unitas 10.Moon ------------------ Ceo of the Walt Williams fan club. Moon was the greatest QB in Houston Oiler history but I wouldn't say he was the greatest in NFL history. ------------------
The greatest QB ever wouldn't have been a part of back-to-back-to-back debacles vs. the Broncos, Bills, and Chiefs. No, I'm not a bitter ex-Oilers fan! But he's definitely a Hall-of-Famer, for his longevity if nothing else. ------------------ "Thirty-seven?" -Randall, Clerks www.clutchtown.com
dean you are being a little too texas loyal. Aikman is not that good. he was not better than bradshaw. He had some AMAZING years. those years were at the right time on a damn good team, but if you are talking about CAREER tan even stauback is better than aikman IMO. Nameth changed the game alltogether. you gotta love broadway joe moon is probably 6 or seven. your top 4 are a lock. put them in any order you like, but SF had some gods at QB. put Elway at 4 in that group. also favre is not in your top 10, and he is alot like Aikman as far as his place in footbal history ------------------ Hanta-Force Paintball http://www.hanta-force.com
If I were to start a franchise with any player, it would be Elway in his prime. He really was a one man show in Denver for a LONG time. I don't think he played with any HOF players. Also, his offensive stats were less than impressive becuz he played in a cold weather city/division, and Reeves ran a conservative offense. ------------------ "We don't have any plans. Was Warren Moon the greatest quarterback ever? Not by a long shot. I would place him in the top ten, but not in the top five. ------------------ "Blues is a Healer" --John Lee Hooker
Grey Cups? Does a Grey Cup hold Grey Water???? I don't think Moon should hover anywhere near the top 10... maybe top 20... but then again, I'm not a big football fan. rH ------------------ The Psychedelic Groove House of Rockets Basketball Love! Warren was a great QB, but the greatest?? No, although he had the sweetest touch and the tighest spiral I`ve ever seen. My top 3 are: 1.Joe Montana 2.Dan Marino 3.John Elway Put them in any order you choose ------------------
I think it's a little weird how so many people put Dan Marino in their top ten, or higher, but not one single mention of Dan Fouts (okay, one by bobrek). Marino was basically the reincarnation of Fouts, and neither got a Super Bowl ring. My top 5: (from 1960 on) 1. Joe Montana (Just about as many come-from-behind victories as Elway and a better winner) 2. John Elway (He's lucky he got those Super Bowls, or he wouldn't be this high) 3. Steve Young (A left-handed Elway?) 4. Terry Bradshaw (Knew how to win, and I hate him with a passion) 5. Dan Marino (Immobile as a brick wall, but had probably the best arm ever) As much as I like Moon, I don't think he belongs in the top ten ever. Top fifteen maybe. And, I hope he gets into the Hall. ------------------ My Rocket Page [This message has been edited by DREAMer (edited January 09, 2001).]
The only modern QB who should be mentioned as "Great" is Montana. You want Great? Try Otto Graham (Best arm ever) and Johnny Unitas. No one is even close to those 2. Montana and Tarkenton make up the second tier. The old QB's used to call ALL their own plays. None of this speaker in the helmet crap. ------------------ When we tire of well-worn ways, we seek for new. True that, BF! Sammy Baugh practically INVENTED the forward pass back in the 30's....and he also led the league in punting four times while playing QB at the same time...in fact, I think he's in the top five all time in punting average... ------------------ If you don't eat your meat, you can't have any pudding!!
No offense Bob, but I don't think most here are quite as experienced as you. I'm sure old Otto never had an LT or Reggie White running after him. Guys are just bigger, stronger, and faster today than they were when Sammy was slingin it. Steve Young should not be in any top 5. The guy is a choker extraordinaire. Aikman may be the most overrated QB in history, just like Emmitt Smith is the most overrated player, period, in history. Put Warren Moon on any of those teams and with a conventional offense, and I guarantee the guy has multiple rings. Oh, and Dan Marino -- 48 TD passes in one year. Nuff said. ------------------ "I have to say I don't understand why the Rockets' fans are booing Scottie." -Calvin Murphy The music industry is a toilet and sh*t floats to the top. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!! Steve Young a choker extrodinaire???????????? I will call your attentions to the greatest football game of all time. 1998 NFC Wild-Card Game Green Bay at San Fransisco :08 on the clock 49ers at the Green Bay 23 Young stumbles, delivers a STRIKE between 5 defenders to Owens in the End Zone, GAME OVER!!! The Clutchest Pass of all time. 1.Young 2.Montana 3.Graham 4.Unitas 5.Namath 6.Fouts 7.Tarkenton 8.Elway 9.Marino 10.Bradshaw ------------------ The next time I have meat and mashed potatoes, I think I'll put a very large blob of potatoes on my plate with just a little piece of meat. And if someone asks me why i didn't get more meat, ill just say, "Oh, you mean this?" and pull out a big piece of meat from inside the blob of potatoes, where ive hidden it. Good magic trick, huh?
While that is true Freak, Otto also didn't have any Nat Moore's or Mark Clayton's or Jerry Rice's catching his passes, which makes his numbers even more impressive. Ugggh...how could I have forgotten Slingin Sammy Baugh. ------------------ When we tire of well-worn ways, we seek for new.
