    Oh hai d&d..

Are you more aware of islam after bin laden and 9/11? Bin laden lost the battle but did he lose the war? are we more united today?

Before 9/11 islam was just another religion in my book.. somewhere between mormon and jehovah witness on the relevance scale to me. A huge yawner.

I am not muslim but i can tell you in these last 17 years I have become more aware of islam. thats for DAMN sure.

they are at the table so to speak. In that sense I can say yes bin laden , 17 years in, was successful and used terrorism to make me aware and further his cause.

Bin ladens goal was a call to islam. He wanted people to know about it. Now I know... I suspect you know a bit more too.

    Interview May 1998:
    Interviewer:

"we heard your message to the American government and later your message to the European governments who participated in the occupation of the Gulf. Is it possible for you to address the people of these countries?

    Bin laden

"As we have already said, our call is the call of Islam that was revealed to Mohammed. It is a call to all mankind.

We have been entrusted with good cause to follow in the footsteps of the Messenger and to communicate his message to all nations. It is an invitation that we extend to all the nations to embrace Islam, the religion that calls for justice, mercy and fraternity among all nations, not differentiating between black and white or between red and yellow except with respect to their devotedness.

All people who worship Allah, not each other, are equal before Him. We are entrusted to spread this message and to extend that call to all the people.
    "

The after 9/11 it was the same message

    bin Laden's 'letter to America

"question that we want to answer: What are we calling you to, and what do we want from you?

The first thing that we are calling you to is Islam."

9/11 was successful in making Americans more paranoid and willing to sacrifice principles such as privacy and disdain for torture.

Osama won. We spent Trillions of dollars on two stupid wars. We have a bunch of new useless agencies that take up billions of dollars. Airline travel suck more. I guess we haven't had another 9/11 so I guess we have that going for us. Terrorism hasn't really gone down.

Sure, I've become more aware of Islam, but that means that I've become more aware of the abuses of Islam. More aware that the vast majority of violent world conflicts over the last 20 years has involved aggression by Islamic factions.....often aggression by radical Islamic factions against the more peaceful Islamic factions, but also aggression by radical Islamic factions against any neighboring country. More aware of the abuses against women and homosexuals in extreme interpretations of Islam. More aware of the outright barbarism inherent with the more extreme interpretations of Islam.

So yeah, I think the world is considerably more aware of Islam today than it was pre-9-11, but a lot of it was not ready for that kind of sunlight.

Hot take: All the actions taken by the United States to "make America safer" as a result of 9/11 increased the threat of terrorism in Europe and North America from Islamic extremists.

Wait... that really isn't a hot take. That is an empirical truth.

The "War on Terror" is one of the most aggregiously failed American polices in our history of existence .

17 years + after and I'm still having difficulty accepting Rumsfeld and Dick's explanations of how it happened. I still don’t understand how Bin Laden can be able to orchestrate such massive attacks ,when lengthy phone calls from cruising planes at 20-30k ' altitudes, building 7 etc. opens more questions than answers

why would Bin Laden take responsibility after his initial denying?

Not really Islam, no. I was already aware and educated on the religion and i was friends with Muslims. It did make me more familiar with the ideas of militant jihadi Islamists. I also think it has contributed to the mis-education of many Americans on Islam -- they've become more aware of Islam, but I don't think they are any more enlightened.

He was successful in making many people fear and hate Islam, and he has been successful in making some Muslims to jihad against the West. But it does not seem he has won any war to date

I think 911 was unsuccessful in the short term from Bin Ladens perspective. It actually did the reverse in attended affect in bringing everyone together and the fact that our NATO allies showed that they had our backs.

It was successful in other ways that Bin Laden probably never considered such as invading Iraq which led to Isis indirectly but also opened up ways for more than ISIS to have more ability to fund through control of the resources and taxing citizens. ISIS is actually a competitor of Al Queda so even that wasn’t a complete victory for Bin Laden regardless. In the end though, in Afghanistan, Al Queda is thriving for many different reasons but I wouldn’t directly relate them to 911. W probably was going to invade Iraq regardless.

I think Russian propaganda, covert operations, weaponizing fundamentalist extremists on the right, and the rise of nationalism is having a much greater impact in damaging our democracy & ultimately creating vacuums for fringe criminals to gain power. They just don’t need to do it by having their young footsoldiers blow themselves up.
