Top pick? trading for it? No. Nobody is trading the top pick with the exception of possibly the Nets.
I'm guessing its too further complement their acquisitions this pass season. If the warriors can get a decent player in the lottery then they should be able to compete for more than just the last couple playoff spots.
If Bogut & Curry can stay healthy, adding a top 10 player could make this team good in a hurry. But those are big IF's.
I certainly believe DM the GM is in the middle of this trying to influence the outcome to Rox best advantage. Now, how can he actually effect that?
If GS can get their pick back, they're gonna make a play for Dwight. Bogut/Lee/pick for Dwight/Hedo. That would be a tempting deal for Orlando. GS runs Dwight out there for one season with Curry, Thompson, Rush, Wright, a bunch of shooters, and sees how much noise they can make and see if they can get Dwight to like Curry well enough to extend.

This is the deepest draft in years. You're looking at the top 15 or so draft picks as all potential good NBA players, and at least 6-8 top 10 picks as future all-stars. The Warriors could land an all-star with the 8th pick, which is why they want to keep it this year. Reading in the local papers, the Jazz wanted the Warriors 2nd round pick this year and the Warriors 1st rounder next year with no protection to lift the top 7 stipulation on the Warriors pick this year. Jazz were asking way too much for a 28% gamble.
It's not a star player deep draft. Warriors keep their pick if they are 1 to 7 in the draft. If you look at the salaries of both teams. The Jazz basically only have expiring contracts. The Warriors could have been trying to dump an "asset" for vet/garbage expiring contracts.
If the Magic is willing to give up Howard for the first pick and some other stuff, everyone should be trying to trade the top pick. Unless this isn't what you're referring to.
I don't blame Utah for asking for a lot in exchange for giving up any right to GSW's lottery pick. That pick stands a decent chance of being #8 overall. Meanwhile, if the Warriors get a full (or even most of a) season out of Andrew Bogut next year, the Warriors' 2013 pick could very well fall in the 12-18 range. And since Utah would get that pick anyway if they don't get the pick this year, there's not a lot that the Warriors can give them to want to give away a chance at a #8 pick in a deep draft.
