Warriors will probably wait until the end on Jackson

Just in talking with some at camp today, word seems to be that St. Jean and the Warriors will wait until the very end to make a decision on Marc Jackson (I think they have until a week from Wednesday?)

Reason they'll wait is they want every second to evaluate their big men.... and if they were to let Jackson go to the Rockets before the deadline, and say Dampier gets injured the next day, they'd look pretty stupid.

One of the reporters there from the Austin-American Statesman was asking Rudy questions about Jackson and you could tell Rudy T was trying to find the words.... not wanting to talk about it much. He basically said he just hopes they get him and it would have been nice to have had him in practice, but his hope is just that they get him.

I talked to Langhi today also (<I>very</I> cool guy) and he was walking better on his foot. He said now he's walking without pain, but he can't cut or anything like that. They say 4-7 days he'll be out.... but he's not sure yet. He kind of laughed saying he's getting treatment 3 times a day on it and not much else he can do.... so he's just playing it by ear.

I talked to Rudy about the SF logjam and Langhi possibly playing the 2 (a question Sherlock posted) and he said that was a possibility....

<I>"Yeah, possibly. He's an athletic guy. There might be something there for him. He could even..... we almost go the other way. We've been putting the threes at four, but that would be an interesting lineup to have him matched up against a guy that he is bigger than, and could give us an advantage offensively, posting up and rebounding."</I>

I also asked about Rice's status and he said:

<I>"He's sort of in day-to-day. He's a professional and I know he works hard and stuff like that but Keith has been doing a great job of just seeing how he's feeling. We're just happy he's here. My concern is the big picture and that's playing the majority of our games and not trying to push him in to a situation where we put him in jeopardy."</I>

This wasn't my question, but I thought Rudy summed up his new optimism now with the rule changes nicely with this quote:

<I>"We got a tape from the league [that illustrates the rule changes]. You can play any defense, but I don't think people are going to do a whole bunch of those things. You can't be in the three second lane if you're not arms length away from your guy, so that really kills all 'zones'. You could say it's going to make you play closer man-to-man."</I>

I should have something up on the site before too long... the Rockets will have a morning practice tomorrow from 10-12 (but I can't make it because of a scheduling conflict with work) and then they're back off to Houston.

Thanks for the info Clutch. Damn Warriors ! By the time they make their decision, the season will be right around the corner, and Jackson won't have much time to practice in the Rockets system at all.

This is my first post on this board, usually I just skim through and read everyones thoughts.. but I was wondering if the Jackson deal doesn't come through, what are the chances of the Rockets persuing Anthony Mason?? I read that the Bucks are unsure as of what to do with him, so he is still free... any thoughts?

Thanks Clutch. Still no Moochie news, tho... I know they're not really going to tell you anything about that, but maybe you could try to go in a round-about way, like "Do you envision Jones as backing up Steve for the most part, or do you see him maybe alternating equally between 1 and 2?" or something like that.

fantastic, Clutch....your camp info just keeps getting better....on par with Feigen's in the last 2-3 days.

imo, and from some other quotes from Feigen, Rudy is interpreting the zone rules to his favor. When he says that you cannot be in the 3 sec lane when more than arm's length away, other coaches are surely saying, "We <b>can now be in the lane</b> for 3 seconds no matter who you are defending."

Personally, I think Rudy is exaggerating the benefit to us to build up confidence in his players. I mean, Francis says the weakside corner defender can no longer get over to cover him on a drive. He said that in today's paper. Stevie!!! The guy can camp in the lane for 3 seconds now, unlike before. Why does he care to be covering the man in the opposite corner, who is at least 2 swing passes away. That man can get you now.

The difference is not that the corner man can stop Stevie more than before; the difference is that we do not have to stand around the 3 point circle to get people out of the lane (the 2 zones away rule). Thus, any of our offensive guys standing weakside can now be closer to the lane, without making Stevie's life more difficult on driving.

Not to say we can't exploit this rules as well as the previous ones, but despite what propoganda Rudy and Francis are spreading, Francis does not have an easier path to the basket. The weakside guys can get him easier. Just now, our weakside offensive players can stand closer to the basket to produce the same effect.

    Thanks Clutch!

This is one of the cooler things about this site. You can ask someone who can ask Rudy a question, and get an actual quotable and detailed answer.

    <b>How cool is that?</b>

    Clutch,

Nice intel. I'd be interested in getting Rudy's take on whether EG can grow into our 5 in a couple of years.

Interesting that he said DL may play some 4, I've thought all along with him bulking up some he would do better there for short spurts then trying to play 2.

    Crisp,

Good analysis. I agree that Rudy's remarks may be a PSYOP to condition his stars into believing they can overcome the new rules. I really think the new rules will improve the "team" aspect of pro ball. Guys will have to cut and move more vice hanging out and watching a guy go 1-on-1. I'm hoping the games will be more exciting because more people are involved in each play. We'll see.
