It was interesting that McCain brought up that Buffet supports Obama. He seems to be widely respected by the GOP and Dems. Buffet is largely untainted by the financial scandal. He also has the personal lifestyle to encourage Americans to live within their means. I think we need a calming trustworthy figure at treasury rather than another investment banker/ hedge fund type guy.
First I don't think Buffet will take the job. Secondly I think a younger person mgiht be better suited for that job, of course Buffet is a very good choice.
I don't think he would like to move away from Nebraska. He might help Obama on selection of a worthy Treasury Secretary. Who knows? Maybe it will be Meg Whitman.
He seems to know finances and he has enough money that maybe he won't be 'bought and paid for' by big business then again . . . he is big busines Rocket River
Meg Whitman was a silly choice by McCain. I understand she's run a company and been in brand management and is educated but she doesn't have the treasury/banking experience necessary at this crucial time. I don't know why McCain doesn't leverage Mitt Romney's background and knowledge of the capital markets and private equity markets.
is anyone watching this conference? i think there's a glitch in the matrix. paulson can't stop stuttering, he's completely freaked out.
Whoever it is will end up being demonized by political opponents. Hank Paulson was one of, if not the most, well regarded CEOs on Wall Street, at the most prestigious firm on Wall Street. Now he's seen as the devil. Expect similar treatment of the future Treasury Secretary.
Buffett probably doesn't want the job at this point in his life. What is he like 80 years old? He probably doesn't want to spend his final years trying to clean up this mess. My choice would be Vikram Pandit, CEO of Citi. He's a rising star in the banking world.
what does that have to do with the price of tea in china. dude is being judged on his performance now, not the past.
Would people want him to put his money in a blind trust or some such if he took the job? Because, that might get complicated.
Buffett is too busy buying everything right now to make another few billion. Why would he want to quit that job?
Being fantastic in business isn't a gurantee that he would be a success either. Some economists blamed Andrew Mellon for the Great Depression. He was one of the richest guys in the world.
Andrew Cuomo @ the SEC Buffett @ Treasury Liebermann @ Defense what do all these (potential) McCain appointments have in common? hint: he walks the walk
They are all really old and about to croak and have better things to do than serve in a McCain cabinet? By the way, did you know Buffet is an Obama backer?
I live in Omaha and have done quite a bit of research on him and if he was given the chance he could turn this around. The guy takes less then $200k for his salary each year, yes he is worth billions but if you look at the Sunday Omaha World Herald they list several CEO`s pay and he is no where close to the other guys, the a$$ at the UPRR where I work makes millions while my close friends get laid off. Warren has ethics so he would not make it in Washington.....if you get a chance read his new book
I just wonder if the other CEOs' pay is also tied to stock compensation/ownership in one way or another.
I think Buffett would be completely bored out of his skull running the Treasury department, compared to what he does now. How 'bout Angry David Walker?
