A friend just called and said that he tried to get into a summer league game to watch the Lakers but they wouldn't let him in because he had a digital camera. He said apparently they've outlawed digital cameras this year. This sucks since a lot of the fun I had last year was taking the hundred or so videos (the greatest of which is the first and only proof that Jason Collier has a vertical greater than 1 inch when he threw down a vicious slam) and dozens of pics with my digital camera.

I'm hoping this was some security guy that misunderstood the rules when my friend tried to get in, but I thought I'd warn any of you that have to travel a ways that you may be leaving the digital camera back in the car. I'm going to take mine anyway and see what happens. Hopefully this security guy had no clue.

Even if I don't get pics and videos this year, I'll still be attending all the games and doing some write-ups on them. The first game vs. the Lakers is televised, so maybe that'll take the place of videos for you guys. :)

I'm going to call up the Pyramid and see what they have to say about this...

Well, you could always DRAW some pictures like someone did a few years ago. I wonder if that page is archived somewhere?

    :D

Wasn't it Clutch that did that? I was going to draw some pictures, take some digital photos of them at my hotel (hopefully the hotel allows digital cameras) and then post them. ;)

Actually, I called up the Summer Pro League media relations people and apparently the security guard screwed up. I talked to a guy who talked to a lady that said it would be ok to bring digital still cameras. I told them that they may want to tell their security guys that because they're not allowing them in. He said she radio'ed them as soon as he told her what I told him and everything should be straightened out.

So for now, I guess it was a blunder on their part and digital cameras are allowed... I'll try to test the waters tonight when I go watch the Grizzlies play.

    DoD,

Did you get the name(s) of the people that said it was OK for cameras?

It doesn't hurt to have it just in case the situation arises.

I think you're right, I think his camera broke or something when the Rockets had training camp in Austin.

By the way, really looking forward to those recaps. Some of the descriptions from the last SPL games had me rolling!

Don't all the phones have built in cameras nowadays?

Also, there is a small digital Casio camera that one can hide really well. Something with Ex...something.

    Mangeaux,

I didn't get the names, but I had their number in my cell phone just in case I met with more resistance. I just got back from the Memphis game (talk about dirt boring) and they didn't even ask me for a ticket muchless anything about the camera I was carrying - and these were different security people.

    Mack,

I think the deal was that the NBA didn't want anyone taking pics at team training camps - so pics weren't allowed.

    The rest of you thugs,

Also, I'm not much into the sneaking stuff around game. What can I say? I'm a conservative dude that likes to obey rules. :( ;)

Anyway, apparently it's legal again, so I'll be taking the ol' Nikon there...

    Here's a thought...

How about if Clutch (or part of the crew) approached the Rockets organization to get a press pass. Then Clutch could either take the pics or lend the pass to someone else to take the pics. They could probably get right up front with great shots of the action, and not have to sneak anything.

If I'm not mistaken, even Clutch isn't allowed to take pics and post them here. I vaguely remember him telling us that he wasn't allowed to take photos at the Rockets training camp in Austin a year or two ago.

    Can someone confirm that?

...Maybe Clutch could have a little private conversation with Tim?...
