The other night Walton remarked that he doesn't like the Defensive 3 Second rule and wishes the NBA would get rid of it altogether...I couldn't agree more - One of the worst things about it is that it's not consistently called -- Often it's a shock to both teams when a whistle blows because it's not obvious half the time...

Does anybody know if the NBA is seriously considering junking this rule?

I HATE THIS CALL. It probably ruins the outcome of many games. Let the players stand where ever they want! If you can't drive, shoot the ball!

The most annoying aspect is how refs call it at the most random times when it happens all the time during the game. Its like they suddenly say to themselves, "Oh crap i forgot Mr. Stern told me to make this call on a consistent basis, let me call it 2 or 3 times in the next 5 minutes then stop."

BTW has the 3 second rule always been in the NBA?

They've had the offensive three second for a long time now, but the defensive three second came in when they brought in zone defenses.

Personally, if they're going to allow zone defenses, then they should eliminate both 3 second rules. This will allow anybody to post up as much as they want, but also let the defense pack as much defensive attention that they can in the paint. This would make things much easier to officiate, and the benefits from each rule change will balance each other out.

huh.... zonez have been allowed in international ball forever..... but so has offensive 3 seconds.....

yeah sure scrap defensive 3 seconds, but keep offensive 3 seconds... the small dotted circled will prevent defenders camping under the basket to prevent drives

I don't know, I'd rather the rules be back like they were before they allowed the zone.

I just think in the NBA, the greatest league in the world which houses the best players from anywhere, you play man on man. If you are a weak defender, it's the job of the coach to find a way to configure the defense to overcome it.

Then again, I've always hated the zone and is a big reason why I really don't watch college ball.

Now, they would need to do better at defining and calling illegal defense more consistantly, but I like the way it was.

3 seconds in an absolute MUST if there is a zone. Could you imagine Ben and Rasheed Wallace being allowed to just clog the paint if they were still together? That would be stupid, boring, and ridiculous. The amount of 3's taken would skyrocket, shooting percentages would plummet, and the overall enjoyability of pro basketball would disappear. You would see less athletes like Gerald Wallace or Kirk Snyder and more Matt Maloneys. And how the hell is Yao supposed to get in position with Elson behind him in the paint and Duncan fronting him?

Defensive 3 secs... Without it the game is ruined.

Ziggy - The amount of threes taken has never been higher - I just can't believe the percentage of threes would increase a lot more w/out the defensive three second call...If you had a player camping under the basket, offenses will exploit the defense - find the open man and convert...But really my biggest gripe is that the defensive 3 seconds is not called with regularity; some ref crews are very eagle-eyed about it, others almost never call it or blow the whistle after 9 seconds...

Give me a break. The last thing I want to see is 8 of 10 ppl on the court cleared on one side, standing and watching two players go one on one on the other side of the paint, the ultra stupid ISO offense. I never want to see it again. It is ridiculous basketball and super dull.

Is this true...I thought is was the other way around, but maybe it was just how convulted the old illegal defense was that is confusing me.

I think defensive three seconds iz actually called really well.

Yeah before the 3 sec defense all, there was a thing called illegal defense

    http://www.nba.com/features/jackson_rules_response.html

Basically if I remember now, it was called if you weren't guarding a man or moving to double team someone. This was called alot when teams used their best offensive guy in an iso situation.

The old illegal defense rule basically outlawed any double teaming on any player without the ball. Under this rule, you could have players like Ryan Bowen who had zero offensive ability still occupying a defender.

The new rule makes such players much more of a liability offensively because the defense can simply ignore him and use an extra defender on the star players. I think JVG's infatuation with Bowen a couple seasons ago was due to the fact that he was still in the mindset of the old rule. Last season, he figured that out and realized that you had to have shooters at every position to keep the defense honest.

I too think that the defensive 3 sec rule should be junked. Let the offense figure out how to beat a real zone. The refs already have too many things to watch. I'd rather them concentrate more on making the right calls on charging/blocking situations. Those calls affect the quality of the game a lot more than the defensive 3 sec.
