Walton in the third quarter said, "The Rockets need to stop playing on instinct and know what they are doing before they do it." This pretty much sums up the team as a whole. They play on instinct far too often and that is simply due to lack of real experience in pressure situations. Those situations build character. It is why the Rockets also seem to unravel so often as well. Big Red got one right.
My wife was laughing at the one where he said that Yao couldn't play Shaq straight-up but Divac could.
Is it just me or is James Posey the most horrible fast break ball handler in the league? It seems either he scores it himself or he throws it away. He needs to learn the bounce pass.
I don't get why the refs don't call an offensive foul on Shaq at least 50% of the time....he ducks his shoulder and bowls over people. That is not basketball, that is crap. DD
my favorite quote for tonight was when Moochie came in during the 2nd quater and he said: "Come on Mooche! Get something going!"
HE GOT EVERYTHING RIGHT TONIGHT!! I didn't disagree with one thing he said. He stated time after time how crappy the Rockets offense is. He mentioned how we have no idea how to run a fast break. He mentioned how we always iso our post players, whether it be Mo Taylor or Yao. It's them posting up, and everybody else standing on the other side watching. I used to think Bill Walton was horrible, but this year he has been one of the best commentators, next to Bill and Calvin of course.
walton has actually grown on me over the years and he is one of those guys who wears his basketball heart on his sleave, but when he says stuff like that it just makes him seem like the big oaf that his detractors say he is. has he really seen every pass made by the rockets over the last four decades??? i also remember him saying in "shaq vs. yao ming I"* the comment "robert horry, the best entry passer in the history of the nba." come on dude! i respect his passion for the game, but when he makes totally outrageous statements like this all the time and it ruins his credibility. *the walton dubbed first meeting of the two centers
My favorite Walton quote was when he said the two teams play exactly the opposite. The Lakers stay with and run the triangle, while the Rockets are all isolation... as Shaq got the ball by himself, backed in, backed in, backed in and laid it up. Still I like Walton.
Yes. I love Bill Walton. BUT GOD. He was annoying. I had to listen to Bill and Calvin. Bill WALTON was just annoying. He's like my pessimistic friend. He just kept on sayin AWWWWWOH. And criticizing the Rockets. But everything he said was pretty much right. Man.......what should we do? First.....Rockets need to declare all their problems.....then they need to fix them.
Actually he only had about 2 or 3 of those moves. The majority of the time, he just backed it in and was just too strong. At this point, Yao is no match for Shaq. That's just the way it is - no shame in that.
I was hoping someone would start a Bill Walton thread.. this guys absolutely irritates me. I live in Austin, so I do not have the luxury of tuning into Bill/Calvin or 610.. but seriously, everything that comes out of that man's mouth is biased and exaggerated. He was commenting on the game as if the Lakers were BLOWING the rockets away, needless to say, the game switched leads and stayed within 4-6 points the majority of the time. Everything he says is PRO lakers.. the Rockets would have won tonight if we didn't have Eddie hurt, and Francis and Ming in a bit of foul trouble.. and not to mention, If he is calling tomorrow's games vs. the spurs, I am putting the TV on MUTE. I can't stand him.
Posey can finish the break but he can't run them because he's a very average ball-handler. Actually no one in our team run faskbreak well. Francis, Mobley etc are also more finishers than ballhandlers.
So you really think we played well (even the game's close)? We didn't play the game the right way. Walton told what it's. The offense we run was boring, average at best. Making some shots off those iso plays didn't mean they're good smooth plays.
Walton has an excellent basketball mind. It continues to amaze me that listeners take everything he says literally. At least half of it is figurative, folks...tongue-in-cheek. Once you learn the difference, he is amazingly enjoyable. But the parts about the Rockets' ineffectiveness by playing on instinct, standing around watching Yao go 1on1, and not being able to run a fastbreak well are among many he has right on the money.
