I don't know if anyone else caught this on the NBC coverage of the Kings v. Rockets game on Sunday but Bill Walton said something very close to, "This is one of the best teams in Rocket history". He was quickly rebuffed for that statement by his counterpart but I'm inclined to agree with him in this respect, talent from 1 to 12. Ask yourself this question, if you took away one player from the 94 or 95 teams (Hakeem) and took away one player from this years team (T-mac or Yao, you pick), which team would win? Until the Rockets win it all, the 94-95 teams obviously must be considered the best teams but just looking at the roster, this team has depth in a way I have not seen before.
He said, "One of the great weeks in Rockets history." and that's why they made fun of him. His colleague said something like, "Yeah. One of the great weeks in Rockets history. Right up there with those back to back championships." It was kind of sad actually. He was straight up ridiculing Walton.
I think he said it was one of the best weeks in rockets history, not team. And he then took that statement back considering the championship year. Walton is full of hyperboles.
I'm going to have to talk to my connection about the bad crack he's been giving me then. Well then nevermind...but on paper they do look good....
Hmm. I wonder where exactly they would rank. Obviously there were a few teams with Dream that were greater as of right now. Those teams with Dream, Drexler and Barkley were pretty good even though they didn't win it all. I'm not old enough to remember before Dream, but I seem to recall there being a good team with Calvin, Rudy and Moses Malone. Maybe one of the Elvin Hayes teams?
I think he words just came out of his mouth, kind of exaggerating, and he didn't expect people to take them that seriously. It meant it as much if he just of said "best week ever". It don't think he meant for us to take it that literally. I wanted to punch that other announcer that laughed and laughed. That was stupid imo.
That 94 team would have taken out the bulls. Our current team has a wayz to go. But hey, mcgrady is one bad mutha.
one of the announcers said something like we are only the 4th team to win 4 straight games over teams with over .600 win percentages, so it was a great week. one for the record books.
Walton seems to use that phrase very often, such as, "The greatest spin move since the history of mankind, the best pump fake in the history of NBA." I't just way of him praising the current rockets team, nothing more nothing less.
I'm just glad that someone in the media consistantly praises the team & has been a Yao fan since day 1. I also think he's correct in saying it was/is one of the best weeks in Rox history - he just forgot the championship qualifier. the other commentator is an a-hole
Thats just his thing, Walton cracks me up. When does he not say 'Blah blah is the best ever' or "i've never seen blah blah play so bad'. Everything is either over the top good or stinks. Not to say taht we aren't good now, but I dont think Walton is a quotable source
It's always been my contention that the 97 team was the best and most talented, with Chuck, Drexler and Hakeem. I really think that was the team to beat the Bulls. Too bad we were robbed by that illegal pick at the end of the conference finals. *gets nervous twitch in eye*
he probably based it on Yao's perfomance in the Phoenix game.. if only Yao can be consistent and average 20 and 10..
Didn't we have a chance to win that game and series with Clyde missing the last shot before Stockton's shot...ahhh crap, now I got the memory in my head now...
I LOVE this current team. But you can't compare back-to-back champs to a team that hasn't played one playoff game together, yet.
Are we getting respect now? Bill Walton is praising us after saying Yao has been a disappointment this season, but also There were two rockets games on late last night. The rockets-warriors game 2nd run on Fox Sports and ESPN was showing rockets-kings from sunday. I was jumping back and forth between the 2 games while playing NBA Street Vol 3 with my Yao and T-mac and mike james look alike.
