Walsh Traded Picks After Receiving Inside Information On Free-Agency?

Chris Sheridan reports that there is no credence to the previous rumor about LeBron James wanting to play with Joe Johnson.

But Sheridan writes that Donnie Walsh seems to have a high level of confidence in the Knicks' ability to sign this summer's top free-agent targets, including LeBron James. Sheridan reasons that "you get the distinct impression that word was somehow passed to the Knicks," given that Walsh went out of his way to shed the contract of Jared Jeffries.

"I ask this: Why would anyone in their right mind trade away what amounts to three No. 1 picks just to clear cap room?" Sheridan wrote. "It's just plain crazy ... unless there is a confidence among the Knicks their Plan A will succeed."

So did Morey have the same info?

If it's true then The NBA front office will be visiting their offices soon. They are in the same city.

I don't think it matters really. The general public doesn't know, and if they did then that would break league rules. Morey will look like it was a wise risk.

Also, there is no guarantee that it's for sure a done deal since. Lot of things can go wrong and NYK end up with nada.

Lastly, assuming NYK did get Lebron, dealing for Hill and a late first round isn't horrible, unless you're the owner having to pay lux tax

Of course they have confidence that the plan will work.....why else would they completely gut the team? They already decided to push the chips all in.

I also have no doubts that LeBron has made up his mind on where he's going, and that he decided long before now.

We're just waiting to hear the news. I suspect that it doesn't come down until at least late July. He'll want to milk the press (who wouldn't)

Yes, but we all know how much Stern wants NY to be a good team again so even if there was significant evidence, I don't think anything would happen.

I know everybody here wants to think Morey pulled a fast one on Walsh. But like many people have said Walsh has never been known to make deals like this. The reason he is even in NY is because of deals like this being made by incompetent GM's like Isiah. So why would Walsh do the same thing that has made NY one of the worst ran franchises in the NBA for years

Probably because he was under intense pressure from fans, media, ownership, and agents not to let Jared "Who?" Jeffries prevent the Knicks from following through with a plan that's been openly discussed for over two years.

What else could Walsh do? With the roster full of horrible contracts that he inherited from Thomas, the Knicks was guaranteed to be a horrible team for years to come. This way, at least Knicks have a chance to start over via free agency. You can only pick up stars two ways, either through FA or draft. Stars don't just fall out of the sky you know...

    I agree with Emjohn-

They have this plan and they have to go all in for it to work. Because its the course they have taken, of course they believe in it.

Walsh has been all-in for 2010 since he got to NY.

This will be one of the most interesting offseasons in NBA History to say the least.

The Knicks were going all in either way.

They had been planning on this 2010 off-season for the past two seasons.

The fate of the Knicks franchise hinges on their success this summer. They had to do anything they could to improve their chances.

Same reason why GM's can't talk about signing other teams players publicly.

    It's called tampering.

    Nothing is final until inked.
Walsh is an idiot or a crazy gambler recklessly taking on risks on his confidence. Confidence that LeBron will be in Knicks uniform? Morey should have pushed on that confidence to acquire Lee.

To be perfectly honest the NBA was at its best when the Lakers, Celtics, Knicks, Bulls..etc where great teams so it wouldn't surprise me if some information leaked to Walsh, mysteriously, that a few players wanted to go play in NY. Saying that the piece sounds like a lot of assumptions defending Walsh for not being an idiot, which IMO he isn't, but if ownership wants something it doesn't matter how good a GM is or isn't.
