Wade agrees to 5-year contract extension

It looks like the Heat will sign Dwyane Wade to a maximum contract extension with little fuss.

Agent Henry Thomas said Monday he expects Wade to sign the extension, for five years and between $75 million and $85 million, on July 12. That's the first day teams can sign free agents, who have been free to negotiate deals since Saturday.

There wasn't much haggling necessary with Wade. He was named Finals MVP after leading the Heat to its first championship and has never expressed dissatisfaction with the organization.

Wade agreed to terms when the Heat extended the offer soon after the start of the negotiation period.

"We're on the same page," Thomas said.

Wade, 24, is set to make $3.8 million next season under the contract he signed as a rookie in 2003. The exact amount of the extension won't be known until next year since it will be pegged to a percentage of the 2007-08 salary cap.

Securing an extension for Wade was the top priority for the Heat. The team also is looking for a veteran point guard, a need since starter Jason Williams is scheduled for knee surgery and Gary Payton, who turns 38 later this month, is the primary backup.

The Heat has had preliminary discussions with the agent for Eddie House, whom the Heat selected in the second round of the 2000 draft. House rejuvenated his career with Phoenix last season, averaging 9.8 points in 17.5 minutes per game.

Agent Mark Bartelstein said the Heat also inquired about two of his other free-agent clients, forwards Devean George and Darius Songaila.

"Nothing is urgent right now," Bartelstein said.

The Nuggets also are interested in House. The Nuggets and Kings have inquired about George and Songaila.

The Heat's practice has been to see how the market shakes out before committing to role players. Coach Pat Riley has said the Heat won't spend its mid-level salary cap exception of about $5 million.

Backup point guards may have gotten pricier with Bobby Jackson reportedly agreeing to terms with the Hornets for $17 million over three seasons. Speedy Claxton, a top sixth man for the Hornets last season, reportedly is set to join Atlanta for $24 million over four years.

me too. i think that we should have "packaged a TE with a player in a trade" to get him.

I think Rafer and Swift plus our TE would've enticed Miami to let him go. Rafer and Swift would have propelled Miami into greatness, IMO.

I wonder if we could get both Wade and KG. We need to address both PF and SG and Mike James just isn't as good as either. Maybe if we package Rybo, Howard, Head, Bogans and next year's first round pick. But I would want lotto protection on that first.

Wade expected to sign shorter contract with HeatESPN.com news services

Dwyane Wade could be following LeBron James' lead.

Wade, who reportedly agreed to a five-year, $80 million max extension with the Miami Heat last week, is instead expected to sign a three-year deal with a player option for a fourth season, ESPN The Magazine's Ric Bucher reported Tuesday.

Earlier this week, sources told ESPN's Stephen A. Smith that James had agreed to a three-year extension worth approximately $60 million, with a player option for a fourth season (rather than what was reported earlier as James being able to opt out of a four-year deal).

On Monday, ESPN.com's Marc Stein reported that Carmelo Anthony was also considering signing a contract extension with the Denver Nuggets similar to James' arrangement with Cleveland. But Anthony, after weighing his options, is expected Wednesday to follow his stated preference by signing a maximum five-year extension worth an estimated $80 million, with an option to be an unrestricted free agent after the fourth season.

The exact values of the contract extensions for James, Wade, Anthony and Toronto's Chris Bosh -- who is also expected to agree to an extension this month -- won't be known until July 2007, when the salary cap is established for the 2007-08 season.

Wade is under contract for next season with the Heat, who will try to defend their first NBA championship. Wade has repeatedly said he wants to stay in Miami. Other than coach Pat Riley saying that getting Wade to agree to an extension is Miami's top offseason priority, the team has not commented on the negotiation process.

Wade was the fifth pick in the 2003 draft, and his rise to stardom was quick. He averaged a career-best 27.2 points during the regular season, making 49.5 percent of his shots, plus averaging 6.7 assists and 5.7 rebounds.

In the playoffs, he was even better, averaging 28.4 points -- and 34.7 in the NBA Finals, when he led the Heat past the Dallas Mavericks in six games.

Isn't there some expectation of a year without a CBA? So Wade and LeBron could theoretically sign a Garnett-type deal?
